Geocache Description:

The Harworth War Memorial is a Grade 2 obelisk type memorial, which was unveiled by Viscount Galway ( Of Serlby Hall ), on 7th of November 1926, and dedicated by Rev. F dArblay Burney ( Vicar of Harworth ). It was designed and made by Tyas and Guest, Stonemasons of Swinton, Doncaster. In 1922 at a meeting in the village institute, it was discussed that a drinking fountain and clock tower be ercted on the village green, this meeting, presided over by Lord Galway also discussed the possibility of a War Memorial to remember "Those poor fellows that gave their lives in the war, if it had not been for their great sacrifice and that of our allies and others in other parts of our Empire, we should not enjoy the freedom we have today". It was suggested that the Parish Council work along side the Colliery Company, who had erected the drinking fountain, to surmount this with a clock tower and a small roof to protect it. Lord Galway also suggested that a commitee be formed to collect subscriptions for the Memorial and he made a donation of £10 to start the fund. Collectors were appointed for Harworth, Styrrup, Plumtree and Serlby. The Memoerial is a two stepped base, mounted by a square plinth, moulded collar/capital obelisk constructed of polished Granite. Bronze wreath in relief on front. Lead in relief inscription located on all four sides of obelisk and three sides of plinth. It is aprox 3m in height and set in a small cobbled enclosure surounded by raised flower beds.
