Geocache Description:

ENG: The cache contains a logbook, pencil and sharpener. You can reach the cache without stepping on the ruins.

1702.gadā Ziemeļu kara laikā krievi B.Šeremetjeva vadībā, postot Vidzemi, nonāca pie Alūksnes un sāka to apšaudīt.

ENG: The cache is dedicated to the castle, which was built in 1342 during the reign of the master of the Livonian Order Burhard von Dreileven on the largest island of Lake Aluksne.

The fortress with 1.85 m thick boulder walls and 8 towers was one of the strongest fortresses of the Order. A 120-meter-long wooden bridge led from Pilssala’s mainland to the Temple Mountain. The castle was consecrated on the day of the Annunciation and named Marienburg.

In 1702, during the Northern War, the Russians, led by B. Sheremetyev, devastated Vidzeme, came to Aluksne and started firing on it. Residents fled to the castle, which housed a 400-strong Swedish garrison. As Russian troops approached Aluksne Castle, the garrison surrendered and the Russians allowed it to leave the castle freely. However, the Swedish officer Wolf and Sergeant Gotchlich managed to set fire to the powder cellars. The castle exploded, killing several hundred Russians and turning the castle into ruins.

At the end of 2019, the restoration of the South Tower of the Livonian Order castle forecourt was completed, which is the only one of the 8 towers of the ancient medieval castle, which has survived to a significant historical extent to the present day.
