Jau 1859. gadā Stopiņos ir sākusi darboties ģipša fabrika. 30. gadu vidū Sauriešos ģipšakmeni ieguva P. Bēma fabrika, kas veda to pārstrādei uz K. Šmita cementa rūpnīcu Rīgā.
Karjera krastos esošās meža takas ir lieliska vieta pastaigām, nūjošanai, skriešanai un riteņbraukšanai, jo visapkārt valda dabas klusums, putnu dziesmas un nav pilsētvidei raksturīgā trokšņa. Šeit mājo daudz putnu, un arī putnu vērotāji ir bieži viesi Sauriešu karjera apkaimē. Vasarās daudzi iedzīvotāji izmanto karjerus peldēm, īpaši iecienīta peldvieta ir izveidojusies Dienvidu ezera malā
