Geocache Description:

**Please be very respectful of the propery and this kiln...it is fragile.  Do not attempt to move any rocks that make up a part of the kiln.  The geocache is located near the kiln, but not in or on it.**

Welcome to the Lime Kiln Puzzle!

The fun will continue after locating the geocache.  There is a single, field puzzle that must be solved in order to gain access to the logbook. It is fairly strait forward...put on your thinking caps and have fun! Everything you need to solve the puzzle is on the cache box itself.

This geocache is placed by myself and hazenhughes, but will be maintained by hazenhughes

We dont have much history on this kiln but from reading the history of other kilns around, it would seem that it may have been built and used in the late 1800's. Lime, or quicklime, is produced from carbonate rocks such as limestone and marble. In kilns like this one, the crushed limestone or Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), is heated to a temperature of about 900°C breaking it down to lime (CaO) and carbon dioxide gas (CO2). The lime is then used for a variety of purposes in building construction, agriculture, medicine, steel manufacture, and paper-making.  According to the locals, they remember hearing that this kiln was primarily used for plaster.  This plaster then would be used over lath, in home building to cover wall framing as we would use drywall today.  This is known as lath and plaster walls.
