Geocache Description:

Bring a writing utensil and a tweezer !!

From its humble beginnings as a sod church, (built by the community members breaking the sod with horses and breaker plows) in 1899, to the second church built (1903) from native rock, reinforced with straw and gumbo, to the gorgeous Queen of the Prairie today, which was built in 1928.  St Elizabeth's has a colorful and interesting history. A few points of interest: in the second church the men asked for a small vestibule where they could store their long stemmed pipes during mass, during the dedication of this second church one of the parishoners climbed up to the steeple and threw candy down to the children, but perhaps the most interesting history regarding the church are the bells. There are 3 of them and they were brought over from the Banat and paid for by some of the parishonors. When they were rung it is said they could be heard as far away as 5 miles.

They were rung to start and end mass, funeral procession, ringing in the New Year, to beckon the community if help was needed, and interestingly when the basketball team won, they rang, too. These bells are still functional and although they do not get rung as often as before, they still welcome the parishoners to mass.

I hope you enjoy your visit to St Elizabeth's, pease be respectful of the area.
