Doughboy (ou Sammy )est un terme informel pour un membre de l'armée des États-Unis ou du Corps des marines, en particulier les membres des Forces expéditionnaires américaines dans la Première Guerre mondiale. Ils ont été largement mémorisés par la production en masse d'une sculpture, l'Esprit du Doughboy américain. Le terme remonte à la guerre mexicano-américaine de 1846-48. Le terme a été utilisé avec précaution pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, remplacé progressivement par "G.I."
A l’exception de leurs pistolets automatiques Colt 45 M1911, de leurs excellents fusils Springfield M1903 et de fusils à pompe, les Marines reçoivent tout un arsenal provenant des dépôts français : mitrailleuses Hotchkiss (les Browning 1907 américaines n’étant pas disponibles en nombre suffisant), canon d’Infanterie 37 mm M 1916, mortiers, FM Chauchat, tromblons Vivien-Bessières. Et, exceptés la pelle, le couteau et d’autres outils, toute une partie de leur équipement individuel (casque Brodie, masque à gaz, etc.) est fournie par l’Armée britannique, tout comme pour leurs collègues de l’Army
Doughboy is an informal term for a member of the United States Army or Marine Corps, especially members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. They were widely memorialized through the mass production of a sculpture, the Spirit of the American Doughboy. The term dates back to the Mexican–American War of 1846–48. The term was used sparingly during World War II, gradually being replaced by "G.I."
With the exception of their Colt 45 M1911 automatic pistols, their excellent Springfield M1903 rifles and shotguns, the Marines received a whole arsenal from the French depots: Hotchkiss machine guns (the 1907 American Browning were not available in sufficient numbers), 37 mm M 1916 infantry guns, mortars, FM Chauchat, Vivien-Bessières truncheons. And, except for the shovel, the knife and other tools, a whole part of their individual equipment (Brodie helmet, gas mask, etc.) is provided by the British Army, just like for their colleagues of the Army.
