Geocache Description:

What is a Revetment?

The purpose of a revetment wall is to protect buildings, roads, and shore towns from the action of tides, waves, or tsunamis. As a revetment is a static feature it will conflict with the dynamic nature of the coast and impede the exchange of sediment between land and sea.  Consequentially, revetments will actually cause beaches to shrink as seen in this process below:

Types of Revetments:

Vertical revetment- This type of revetment is built in areas where there is high wave energy.  Vertical revetments help protect shorelines from large waves but need to have the most upkeep.  This type of revetment is generally made out of concrete slabs.

Curved revetment- This type of revetment helps disperse the energy of waves.  They are specially designed for each shoreline and are generally made out of curved concrete.

Mound revetment- This type of revetment is the least durable option against waves.  Mound revetments are usually made out of rocks, dirt, or even sandbags.  These revetments are placed in areas with a lesser amount of coastal erosion.

Logging Requirements:

  1. How has the revetment at the GZ affected the coastline? Has it made the beach smaller, larger, or even non-existent?

  2. Which of the three types of revetments is at the GZ? Is this type of revetment wall properly chosen based on the height of the waves? Please explain your answer using observations that you noticed at the GZ.

  3. Based on your experiences at the GZ, do you see any problems with Wildwood's revetment wall that may inhibit its durability and purpose?

  4. As of June 2019, earthcaches are now allowed to have a required photo logging task.  Please provide a photo of yourself, your GPSr, or a personal item that proves that you have visited this site.  Please post this in your log.

**Confirm your find by answering these questions on this Google Form or by sending your answers to us via message center**
