What is the Original Can of Beans?
Dave Ulmer, the inventor of geocaching, placed a can of blackeyed peas in the first ever geocache or ‘GPS Stash’ in May of 2000 at a location in Oregon. Often referred to as OCB, it is a legendary part of geocaching culture and was even featured in 2016 on the Travel Channel. When the plaque commemorating the "Original Stash" was placed, Dave Ulmer and fellow geocachers, Team 360, discovered that the can of beans, now rusted, was still buried at GZ. Team 360 recovered the OCB and carried it home with them to Arizona.
Now safely displayed in a secure container, the OCB is often seen at various Mega Events. We saw the Original Can of Beans for the first time in Indiana and have also seen it in Nova Scotia and Ohio. Most recently, we saw the OCB at the UK Mega Event last year in Scotland.

To celebrate 20 Years of geocaching we ask anyone who would like to join in to bring a can of beans to the event. It can be any type of beans you like and we will take them, after the event, to a local food bank as a charitable contribution.
It is our hope that this idea might catch on and other OCB events will be held in the future to contribute to reducing hunger.

We will play a geocaching trivia game and prizes will be awarded. You will also receive a souvenir for attending this event.
Please note that the City of Greensboro requires wearing a mask when in public. And, we will keep our social distance by spreading out under the picnic shelter.
