Geocache Description:

20 August 2022, 17:30 - 19:30

(That's 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM)

20 Years!

WOW! 20 (plus 2) Years of Geocaching!
Let's Celebrate on International Geocaching Day!
And Help Try to Set a Geocaching Record!

May 1, 2000 - An announcement was made that Selective Availability would be lifted.

May 2, 2000 - At approximately midnight, EST Selective Availability lifted and the accuracy of GPS technology was greatly improved.

May 3, 2000 - Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket at N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800, filled with videos, books, software, and a slingshot as well as a logbook and pencil. He called it the First GPS Stash. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav. Within three days two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was born!

So many things have changed with the game and so many have remained the same - since 2000 and even since 2010. Think about changes you've seen over this time or just since you started caching. Maybe we'll discuss.

That is sort of a theme for this particular event.  For instance, 12 years agao, I hosted a Lost & Found Event (as they were called at the time) nearby. I really wanted to have it at the same location (under new management), but they were unable to facilitate this sort of event. I still hope that at least some of those who were there in 2010 will be able to attend again. Some have moved, some don't seem to play anymore, and we've lost at least one. Of course, I hope to see many new faces, as well.

I'm really glad to finally be able to host my Community Celbration Event. I decided I wanted to wait until I could have a traditional meet & greet event in this sort of setting. Once I heard about the record attempt on International Geocaching Day, I knew this was the time. I checked and didn't see another within 40 miles.

Who:
Why, YOU, of course...whether you have one cache find or a ten-thousand plus cache finds, please feel free to come join us for a small meet and greet. Young or old - bring the kids, parents or friends.

Please be sure to reference the number of people being represented by your Will Attend log. And please try to post your log at least a week ahead of time, so I can give the management as accurate a count as possible and they can be prepared to provide an appropriate level of service.

When:
International Geocaching Day
Saturday, August 20th from 5:30 until 7:30 pm (or so).

Where:
Double-T Diner
Laurel, MD
240-280-8688

Why:
Have dinner, meet geocachers new and old, talk geocaching, trade travel bugs and geocoins and share in the fun of celebrating the 20th (well, 22nd) anniversary of geocaching and help set a record for most explorers out caching or on an Adventure in a single day.

It is possible, if the record is set, it is possible to get 3 Souvenirs for attending this event (if this is your first Community Celebration Event).

  • 2020 Community Celebration Event
  • International Geocaching Day 2022
  • Geocaching World Record 2022

Extra things to keep in mind:

  • If you pick up a Travel Bug or trackable coin at one of the events, make sure you log it out so it doesn't show up in the events list. If a trackable sits as being listed in the event for a couple of months, the cache owner is the one that gets the e-mail from the TB owner(s).
  • Each person attending will be responsible for any costs incurred for food and drinks.
