Geocache Description:

03 May 2022, 18:00 - 20:00

Today is the official birthday of the first geocache placed so its time for a birthday party! The party will begin at 6:00pm and will wrap up at 8:00pm.

On this day (May 3, 2000) 22 years ago Dave Ulmer, of Beaver Creek, Oregon, placed his “stash” and put the co ordinance of the stash on an internet group site. He thought of the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt”, that was all it took and Geocaching was born. Well that and a couple of months of excitement and work to develop a data base and finally a website by others that had interest in Dave’s idea.

Over the past weekend there were many geocaching events to celebrating this 20 year anniversary. Being I could not make any of them due to family commitments I went to where geocaching started for me, Roseville Parks and Recreation, and started plans for this celebration of the day geocaching began. Roseville Parks and Recreation has supported geocaching for 5 years now with hosting events and also encouraging caching in their parks, they also have had Geocaching 101 classes, one of which got us in the game.

What to expect for this event?

Log into the event in a replicated cache of the original “Stash”, this stash will then become a travel bug to commemoration of this date. With this TB we will have a memory book to put together that will travel with the bug. So bring with you, on letter size paper, a memory of a geocache you have done, include the GC number and the name of the cache. These memories can be your first cache find, the oldest cache you have found, the farthest from home found, the longest it took to find, the hardest, the easiest, the most adventuress, the best cache you have found, the most creative or just your favorite, make it any you chose. Once we have this collection we will add them to the travel bug which will then be added to as it travels along. We will also have supplies on hand for those that want to add something at the event.

As for the rest of the event, bring all of your caching stories you can tell in a night because it will be a night of reflection, like a meet & greet.

If you would like to bring a picnic dinner that would be fine as it is a nice park for this. Also there is a great play area very near the pavilion for the kids to enjoy themselves. And as always if you would like to bring some goodies for other to enjoy that is always welcome.

Thank you to Roseville - Eastpointe Recreation Authority for the use of their park and pavilion for this event and their continuing support of Geocaching.
