I am Swedish and live in Sweden with my English husband and our grown up children. In March we are going to visit my mother and father-in-law, who recently moved to Portland. I thought it would be nice to host a "fika" event to meet local geocachers and have "fika" together. I will be bringing some Swedish buns and if you want something to drink with it, you bring your own coffee/tea. There is a café nearby where you can purchase coffee if preferred. Of course you are welcome to the event and just meet and greet without having "fika".
We'll meet at the coordinates above at 11am -11.30 am on Sunday 15th March.
Fika, a social cup of coffee
The swedes prefer not to translate the word fika. They don’t want it to lose significance and become a mere coffee break. It is one of the first words you will learn when visiting Sweden, right after tack (thank you) and hej (hello).
Fika is much more than having a coffee. It is a social phenomenon, a legitimate reason to set aside a moment for quality time. Fika can happen at any time, morning as well as evening. It can be savoured at home, at work or in a café. It can be with colleagues, family, friends, or someone you are trying to get to know. It is a tradition observed frequently, preferably several times a day.
Accompanying cinnamon buns, cakes, cookies are crucial, even open-faced sandwiches pass as acceptable fika fare. It comes as no surprise that Swedes are among the top consumers of coffee in the world – or that Swedes appreciate the good things in life.
