2000 years ago Aventicum, today's Avenches, was the capital of the Helvetians and a Roman colony. More than 20'000 inhabitants populated the city and made it a regional centre of culture and economy. While today's Avenches is more concentrated on the medieval town on the hill, the well-preserved remains of the old Roman enclosure wall give an idea of how big the town must have been at that time. The arena for up to 16,000 spectators, which adjoins the medieval old town and also contains the Roman museum, the former theatre, two temples and the remains of the thermal baths, are still preserved.
Our Labcaches will show you these ruins and ask you a few questions. With every labcache you will also receive a bonus number, which you can use to log this bonus cache at the end. The walk can be done well on foot, we recommend to follow the route of the official tour (which you unfortunately need to search by Google as Groundspeak forbids me to link it), so you can see the old city gate as well. If you are in a hurry, you can also reach almost all the sites by car .
