The Sussex Mega Team are delighted
to welcome you to

Sussex by the Sea

Details

Date: Tuesday 4th August 2020
Time: 10:00 - 13:00
Where: Goring Greensward.

Goring-by-Sea on the South Coast is an extremely popular place at all times of the year, especially the summer months. With its large grassy area right next to the beach and free parking it will be our base today.
The pathway at the top of the beach runs for miles in both directions, its stroller friendly, great for dog walking and absolutely full of caches.
Bring along your picnic & chairs and look out for the Sussex flag as we are also going to have a game of Stoolball!

What is Stoolball?

Stoolball is a sport that dates back to at least the 15th century, originating in Sussex, southern England. It may be an ancestor of cricket (a game it resembles), baseball, and rounders, in fact stoolball is sometimes called "cricket in the air". There is a tradition that it was played by milkmaids who used their milking stools as a "wicket" and the bittle, or milk bowl as a bat. Hence its archaic name of bittle-battle.
The sport of stoolball is strongly associated with Sussex; it has been referred to as Sussex's 'national' sport and a Sussex game or pastime.
Today we are going to bring along our Stoolball equipment and recreate our own Mega version of this Sussex pastime.
