Geocaching is what we’ve made it! And we’ve made it – in fact geocaching in now entering into its 20th year! If that’s not something worth celebrating, what is?
The History:
On May 2nd, 2000, the US Government, under an order from the White House, switched off GPS "selective availability" for non-military GPS. This immediately improved GPS accuracy to within a few meters.
The next day, on May 3rd, Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket near a road in the forest outside of Beavercreek, Oregon (near Portland) and posted the GPS coordinates on the internet - the sport of geocaching was born. This geocache became known as "The Original Stash" with the GC code "GCF".
And now in 2020:
On Saturday, October 10, 2020, we will celebrate 20 years of geocaching with a community gathering at Farewell Bend Park. We’ll be at the picnic shelter.
This is an opportunity to get together, have a bite of cake, play some games, have a drawing for door prizes, perhaps find a new cache, or learn about geocaching if you’re brand new to the game.
The Community Celebration Event has a special geocache icon specific to this event. Attendees also receive a souvenir! It’s a double whammy!
Feel free to bring any TB’s you would like to share or have others discover. We hope you can join us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of geocaching!
