Geocache Description:

13 June 2020, 09:00 - 11:00

Geocaching is going to be 20 years old 🎂 this year so we are having a party to celebrate.  So I hope you can join us and other geocachers to celebrate. Plus you can earn a special event souvenir that will be added to your profile statistics.

When: June 13, 2020 from 09:00 am to 11:00 am

Where: John Beasley Park

I will also be celebrating my 11th year geo-anniversary (June 17, 2009) and milestone (11,000+ finds), along with other Cacher's geo-anniversary and milestone. , We will be drawing for lots of prizes Including this special event swag.  I will discuss with cachers who haven't done the Okaloosa County Geotrail and show the two coins you will get once you complete it.  If you would like to read more about it ahead of time you  can Click Here. To download your passport for the trail CLICK HERE. We can also share stories of our past or upcoming geo-adventures. We will take a group photo on the beach at 10:00 am.

Bring your beach attire, cooler with drinks, beach chairs/blanket, towel and sunscreen. Come out and enjoy a beautiful day at the beach. I have reserved a pavilion so rain or shine the celebration will go on. 🥳

I'll also be sharing several upcoming  exciting news in the BeachBumsX2 world for this year.

Fun Facts:

What is “Big Blue Switch” day?

On May 2, 2000, just past midnight, the U.S government discontinued its use of Selective Availability in order to make GPS more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade. Prior to this date, only the military had the ability to receive accurate GPS readings. Now, the world and all its wonderful people could pinpoint their precise location. For reasons unknown, this is often referred to as the flipping of the “Big Blue Switch”.

The very next day, a computer consultant named Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket in the woods near Portland, Oregon. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot, then posted the coordinates online.

Three days later, the container was located by Mike Teague. Now, twenty years later, geocaching has become a global phenomenon to get off the couch and get outside.
