Geocache Description:

21 May 2022, 08:00 - 10:00

Everybody has a different way of waking up in the morning.  Here's a way to start out your morning with a Geocaching Community Celebration Event. Geocaching is now 22 years old and a week ago Friday was National Frog Jumping Day!

National Frog Jumping Day? With Signal the Frog as Geocaching.com's mascot, it seemed appropriate to have an event around this date.

The history behind National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. This story also goes by “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog” and “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. The man who he bets with ends up tricking Smiley and wins the bet.

Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. The first event was held in Copperopolis, California in 1893 but has since made its permanent residence in Angels Camp. The fair spans four days and offers classic fair food, award-winning wines, carnival rides, rodeo, and live music, amongst other things, but their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 ¾ inches since 1986. Even though there are other frog jumping competitions throughout different cities in North America, the one at Calaveras is the most popular and well-known because of its relation to Mark Twain’s short story. This day allows people to celebrate the agility of frogs and to embrace literature in a new and exciting way.

It's Spring and the days are getting warmer. What better way to meet and greet your fellow geocacher than with breakfast, a morning beverage of your choice, geocaching talk and frog games?

Come on down and grab a cup of coffee and spend some time shooting the breeze with other local geocachers. You'll be able to trade travel bugs and just hang out for awhile while you recharge your batteries with your favorite type of morning beverage.

Shenanigans will include, but might not be limited to frog door prizes, possibly a frog jumping contest and perhaps a couple of other frog games.

This event will be held in the Village West in Claremont in the open patio area west of Indian Hill just south of 2nd St. There several different establishments where you can get breakfast items and/or your favorite coffee beverage. The event will start at 8:00 AM and end somewhere around 10:00 in the morning. That way, you'll still have plenty of time to do whatever you wanted to do for the rest of the day. There is plenty of parking for this event (see parking waypoint) and the patio area will allow you to bring your pooches to the event if you feel so inclined.
