Tolosa Cardo Maximus : D'un cœur à l'autre ...
Vous vous trouvez sur la Place du Capitole à Toulouse, probablement la plus belle place de France 
!
Il s'agit incontestablement du cœur de la ville de Toulouse, mais cela n'a pas toujours été la cas... A l'époque des Romains, cet endroit était en fait la à limite de la ville. En superposant le plan de la ville avec celui de l'époque antique, les remparts passaient à l'emplacement de la place du Capitole et à cet endroit se trouvait une imposante porte nommée la Porterie.
Au Moyen-Age, la création du Capitoulat (XIIe siècle) entraîna la construction de la maison commune, futur Capitole : le lieu avait était volontairement choisi à l'opposé du château comtal, au niveau de la porte Sud, et ce, afin de rester à l'écart de l'influence du comte. La Porterie et les remparts ont été rasés au XVIIe siècle, lors de la création de la Place par les Capitouls qui souhaitaient transformer le Capitole en un palais et une place à la hauteur de leur pouvoir. Les fondations de la Porterie ont été retrouvés de nos jours lors de la construction du parking souterrain situé sous la place.
La ville romaine était architecturée autour de deux axes majeurs :
- L'axe Nord/Sud ou "Cardo Maximus" allant de l'actuel Capitole jusqu'à Palais de Justice ;
- L'axe Est/Ouest ou "Decumanus Maximus" allant du Pont-Neuf jusqu'à la cathédrale Saint-Etienne
En observant la carte ci-dessous, on peut remarquer la présence de plusieurs bâtiments romains, tels qu'un amphithéâtre (Actuelle église de la Daurade), un aqueduc (En amont de l'actuel Pont-Neuf). Mais on note surtout cette grande place principale se situant à la croisée des deux axes principaux : il s'agit du forum, et tout comme la place du Capitole aujourd'hui, ce lieu était autrefois le cœur de la ville.
De nos jours, toutes ces constructions ont disparu. Avec le temps, le forum a fait place à des bâtiments. Les deux axes romains ont vu leurs tracés modifiés et ne sont plus nécessairement les routes principales d'autrefois.
Néanmoins, certaines rues du centre historique de la ville suivent toujours ces axes, comme la Rue Saint-Rome, correspondant à l'ancien Cardo Maximus.
En route vers la Cache!
Cette cache multiple va vous permettre de parcourir l'ancien tracé du Cardo Maximus, et notamment la portion faisant le lien entre les deux cœurs de Toulouse, le moderne et l'antique. Vous comprenez mieux le titre de la cache maintenant! L'axe vous fera emprunter une des rues historiques de la ville, la rue Saint-Rome, ainsi que la rue des Changes dans son prolongement.
Pour pouvoir trouver la cache, votre sens de l'observation sera mis à contribution. La mosaïque ci-dessous montre 10 images numérotées de 0 à 9 d'éléments que l'on peut observer le long et autour du Cardo Maximus. Ces éléments vont de petits détails à des éléments architecturaux pouvant être grands, mais pas forcément apparents si on n'a pas la curiosité d'observer autour de soi... . Chacun d'eux peut être vu sur l'une des 10 étapes (de A à J) que comporte ce parcours : il faut donc associer la lettre d'une étape à la valeur de l'image correspondante.
Une fois que vous aurez appairé chaque détail à son lieu, vous pourrez alors déduire les coordonnées du lieu final :

Tolosa Cardo Maximus: From one heart to another ...
You are on the Place du Capitole in Toulouse, probably the most beautiful square in France !
It is undoubtedly the heart of Toulouse, but this has not always been the case.... In Roman times, this place was actually on the edge of the city. By superposing the plan of the city with that of the Ancient Age, the ramparts passed through the site of the Place du Capitole and there was an imposing gate called the Porterie.
In the Middle Ages, the creation of the Capitulat (12th century) led to the construction of the common house, the future Capitol: the place had been deliberately chosen opposite the county castle, at the South gate, in order to stay away from the count's influence. The gate and ramparts were demolished in the 17th century, when the Capitouls created the Square, wishing to transform the Capitol into a palace and a square at the height of their power.The foundations of the Porterie were found nowadays during the construction of the underground car park located under the square.
The Roman city was structured around two major axes:
- The North/South axis or "Cardo Maximus" from the current Capitole to the Palace of Justice;
- The East/West axis or "Decumanus Maximus" from the Pont-Neuf to Saint-Etienne Cathedral
By observing the map below, we can notice the presence of several Roman buildings, such as an amphitheatre (Present church of La Daurade), an aqueduct (Upstream of the current Pont-Neuf). But above all, we note this large main square, which is at the crossroads of the two main axes: it is the forum, and just like the Capitol Square today, this place was once the heart of the city.
Nowadays, all these buildings have disappeared. Over time, the forum has been replaced by constructions. The two Roman axes have had their routes modified and are no longer necessarily the main roads of the past. Nevertheless, some streets in the historic centre of the city still follow these axes, such as Rue Saint-Rome, which corresponds to the former Cardo Maximus.
On the road to the Cache!
This multi-cache will allow you to follow the old Cardo Maximus route, and in particular the section linking the two hearts of Toulouse, the modern and the ancient. You now have a better understanding of the cache title!
The axis will take you along one of the city's historic streets, rue Saint-Rome, as well as rue des Changes as an extension.
To be able to find the cache, your observation skills will be used:
The mosaic below shows 10 images numbered from 0 to 9 of elements that can be seen along and around the Cardo Maximus. These elements range from small details to architectural elements that can be large, but not necessarily apparent if you do not have the curiosity to observe around you..... Each of them can be seen on one of the 10 steps (from A to J) that this path includes: it is therefore necessary to associate the letter of a step to the value of the corresponding image.
Once you have matched each detail to its location, you can then deduce the coordinates of the final location:
