Monument Description: Stone wheel cross on square plinth and two-stepped base. The memorial is to the two communities of Murton and New York, on the edge of North Shields but near Shiremoor. The memorial is Grade II listed.
The original inscription is somewhat weathered in places and difficult to read, however all the details have now been duplicated on a new Slate Slab that lies just in front of the monument.
Main Inscription reads: PASS NOT THIS STONE IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE FOR THEY DIED THAT YOU MIGHT LIVE
UPDATE : JAN 2022 - Sadly the Monument has been damaged during the recent storms - The upper Cross has been dislodged and has caused damage to the Lower Slate Slab... Cache description has been modified slightly to ensure the required details are now easy to read.
