Les différentes coupes réparties tout au long de la falaise de Port-Lazo permettent aux spécialistes d'obtenir de précieuses informations sur les variations climatiques régionales sur quelques centaines de milliers d'années.
D'un côté, la base de la falaise montre un niveau horizontal de galets qui reposent en discordance sur des bancs de grès. Ces galets constituent les vestiges d'une plage ancienne indiquant qu'il y a environ 120 000 ans la configuration des lieux devait être comparable à la physionomie actuelle de la grève.
De l'autre côté, ces galets disparaissent, faisant place à des coulés de boue riches en blocs et en cailloux anguleux qui résultent de la fracturation du socle rocheux sous l'action du gel lors des périodes de froid intense. Généralement désignés en Bretagne par le terme de "heads", ces niveaux correspondant à des dépôts de pente en milieu périglaciaire. Ils se sont mis en place il y a quelques dizaines de milliers d'années, lors des périodes de dégel estival des terrains superficiels.
D'autres niveaux, aux sédiments beaucoup plus fins, de teinte ocrée, apparaissent. Il s'agit de limons d'origine éolienne (Lœss) transportés depuis le bassin de la Manche alors asséchée et parcouru par des fleuves y déposant des sédiments très fins repris par les vents.
The various sections distributed along the Port-Lazo cliff allow specialists to obtain valuable information on regional climate variations over a few hundred thousand years.
On one side, the base of the cliff shows a horizontal level of pebbles that lie unconformably on sandstone benches. These pebbles are the remains of an ancient beach indicating that about 120 000 years ago the configuration of the site was to be comparable to the current physiognomy of the strike.
On the other side, these pebbles disappear, giving way to mudslides rich in blocks and angular pebbles that result from the fracturing of the bedrock under the action of frost during periods of intense cold. Generally designated in Brittany by the term "heads", these levels corresponding to slope deposits in periglacial environment. They were set up a few tens of thousands of years ago, during the summer thaw periods of the superficial terrain.
Other levels, with much finer sediments, of ocher hue, appear. They are silts of Aeolian origin (Lœss) transported from the basin of the Channel then dried and traversed by rivers there depositing very fine sediments taken by the winds.
