Meet Johan, he is the grandfather of three: Alex, Anna, and Andre. He loves Halloween and carving pumpkins! He enjoys teaching his grandchildren history. This year he is telling them about the jack-o'-lantern.
“Well kids, jack-o'-lanterns originally came from Ireland. Where they would hallow out turnips, gourds, potatoes, and even rutabagas and carve faces on them. Why? The Celts believed they would ward off evil spirits. So with their houses safe they could sleep peacefully. Nowadays people use them as decorations, sometimes spooky and others cutesy faces.
I’ve hidden a wonderful treat for you to find, first one there gets the special treat! These jack-o'-lanterns that I've carved will show you the way!“
He ends the history lesson with a little poem -
Off you go wandering the woods,
In search of something big or small.
Not sure of what goods,
If any at all.
It’s all trick or treat,
Looking for something sweet to eat.
Look hard and fast
To be the first instead of last
Good luck but don’t be too keen,
Have fun and a HAPPY HALLOWEEN.
