Geocache Description:

This is another in the Village Sign series of geocaches.

Albury's history goes back well over a thousand years. Its name comes from the Old English ald (old), burh (fortification). In the Domesday Book it was listed as Eldeberie. An alternate etymology states that Eldeberie derives from 'Alderbury', alluding to the prevalence of alders on the banks of the small but lively River Tillingbourne, which runs through the area.

Albury's current location was originally the hamlet of Weston Street. The old village was mostly in what is now Albury Park, to the east, the village having 'drifted' westward in the 18th century, due to harassment of the residents by a landowner who wanted to develop the original village site as a park.

This village sign depicts the brick chimneys of Albury, designed by Augustus Pugin. There were originally 63 of them, each of a unique design.

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information, bookmarks and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do.
I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk
so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
