L'histoire du Angelo Chatas
D'origine grecque, Angelo Chatas rejoint la marine américaine en 1943 et intègre l'équipe des hommes-grenouilles, dans l'unité de démolition de combat naval, plus connue désormais sous le nom de Navy Seals. 216 hommes, répartis en 11 équipes, vont être déployés sur Utah Beach à bord de la Corvette NCDU 125.2.3. Six hommes de la Marine et six ingénieurs de combat de l'armée dans chaque équipe pour une mission en deux temps. D'abord, débarrasser la plage en dynamitant mines et pièges, pour le débarquement des barges et tanks. Puis, permettre aux troupes au sol de quitter la plage rapidement pour progresser dans les terres.
À bord d'un canot pneumatique, l'homme-grenouille Angelo Chatas débarque sur un secteur d'Utah avec 27 nageurs, à 6 h 12, le 6 juin 1944. Il est l'un des premiers à mettre le pied sur le sol français. Le Débarquement a lieu quelques minutes plus tard. Son équipe bénéficie d'un matériel de mise à feu électrique, permettant de travailler plus rapidement, alors qu'à Omaha, ils n'ont que des détonateurs.
Blessé par balle par l'artillerie allemande, Angelo Chatas refuse d'être évacué, pour continuer sa mission. Vers 8 h, 700 m de plage sont nettoyés, puis 900 m supplémentaires en fin d'après-midi. Seuls 12 soldats de son unité survivront à cette journée. Huit jours plus tard, il est rapatrié en Angleterre. Il retourne, le 15 août 1944, en Provence pour l'opération Dragon. De retour aux États-Unis, Angelo Chatas fait carrière dans le pétrole. Il décède en septembre 2010.

The history of Angelo Chatas
Angelo Chatas was born on March 9, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, to Athanasios Tsatas and Stavroula Marinos Tsatas. He attended Tilden Tech High School, and served in the US Navy during the D-day invasion as an underwater demolitions expert – a “frogman”.
He touched French soil at 0612 on 6 Jun 44 on Utah Beach. He was wounded by German artillery but refused evacuation to continue his mission of clearing the beach of demolitions. He was repatriated to England to treat his wounds, but returned to France as part of Operation Anvil Dragoon in August 44.
Following the was he graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He received an honorary M.S. from the University of Beverly Hills, CA, and an honorary Doctor of Engineering from the Dallas Petroleum Engineers Club. On November 22, 1951, he married Zoe Shropulos of Dallas, Texas. His career with Mobil Oil took him to Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Iran, England, France, and India, as well as Texas, Oklahoma, and New York City.
On the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, he was awarded the Order of National Merit by French President Francois Mitterand. A street in Normandy has been named "Allee Angelos Chatas," and in June 2009 he was made an honorary citizen of Saint Marie Du Mont, the first French village liberated in the war. He passed away in his sleep on 9 September 2010.
