Beecroft

The suburb of Beecroft was named by the Minister for Lands, Sir Henry Copeland in the 1880's. It was the surname of both his first and second wives, Hannah and Mary Beecroft. It was a bushland area which was considered to have a healthy climate. Education was always very prominent in the area with 7 schools being run in the suburb in the early days. Two of those remain today. Beecroft Primary School near the station was opened in 1897.

About Beecroft Station

Beecroft Station was opened in 1886 with the opening of the Main North Line, part of the growing Sydney Railway Network. It was moved to its present location in 1892. In the early days there were only 2 trains each day, one towards the city in the morning and the return journey in the evening. For much of the year these trains went through Beecroft in the dark so patrons would walk to the station carrying their own kerosene lantern. These lanterns were left on the platform during the day ready for the walk home at night.

At GZ you are standing on the original platform from 1886. It was still visible as recently as 2015 but was demolished to make way for the duplication of the line with a 3rd track being built. Look across the tracks and you can see the remnant bricks from the western platform.
