Initially, take the bridlepath track from Old Bewick up the hill
and pass through a couple of gates onto the moorland.
If you care to climb to the top of the big hill to your right
there should be remnants of ancient forts and, on the other side of
this hill are cup and ring marked rocks. You can incorporate it
into a circular route after visiting the cache site and as most of
this is marked on the map as a bridleway, the route should be
relatively easy going.
Thanks to The Northumbrian for providing the co-ordinates for
the cup and ring marks, these can be found at N55 29.262 W 001

Walking along the track, you’ll arrive at a Bronze Age burial
cairn with standing stones around the outer ring. This is not your
typical 'pile of stones on a hilltop' cairn. You can walk inside
the circle where there are both square and round pits encased in
large stones with a huge pile of smaller stones in the centre.
To find the cache, head further along the track to the abandoned
farmstead. When we were there, the mist was rolling in over the
hills and the whole area was really spooky and surreal.
The most interesting thing about the farm is the terraced
gardens; someone must have spent such a lot of time, trouble and
effort in creating them. Trees have been planted within and on top
of the natural rocky outcrop and you really don’t expect
rhododendrons growing in the moorland. The plum trees are laden
with fruit at this time of year, so take something to put them in
if you want to collect some.
Take some time to explore and wonder where nature ends and
man-made structures begin. If you visit, please post some photos if
possible and if you know any of the history behind this area, we’d
be interested in hearing it.
Please Note: Although you may pass by the burial cairn, cup and
ring marked rocks and the fort, this cache is not located near to
any of them. If you want to visit these locations, (except the
cairn, which you no doubt will pass within a hundred feet or so of
the track) please refer to the text on this page for guidance.
