Sint Eustatius was the most important trading post of the West India Company and Dutch people used the island to grow coconut, coffee, sugar and tobacco. The island also played a prominent role in Dutch slavery history. In total, around 80,000 slaves were brought from Africa to St. Eustatius, to work on the plantations and to be transported to mainland America.
Commander Jan de Windt
Jan de Windt jr. Was commander of Sint Eustatius, Saba and Sint Maarten, from 1752 until his death in 1775, the first two years ad interim. His residence was on St. Eustatius, which at that time was an important transit port for the WIC. Under De Windt, sugar from British and French plantations was even purchased, which was then shipped as Statian sugar. These liberal trade practices later formed an argument for the British during the Seven Years' War to confiscate Dutch trade ships, because these neutral ships would "smuggle" goods from their arch-enemy France.
Jan de Windt and his wife Alletta van Rincorn are buried in the cemetery near the ruins of the Reformed Church of St. Eustatius.

Sint Eustatius vormde de belangrijkste handelspost van de West-Indische Compagnie en Nederlanders gebruikten het eiland om kokos, koffie, suiker en tabak te verbouwen. Het eiland speelde daarnaast een prominente rol in het Nederlandse slavernijverleden. In totaal werden zo’n 80.000 slaven vanuit Afrika naar Sint-Eustatius gebracht, om te werken op de plantages en om doorgevoerd te worden naar het vasteland van Amerika.
Commandeur Jan de Windt
Jan de Windt jr. was commandeur van Sint Eustatius, Saba en Sint Maarten, van 1752 tot aan zijn dood in 1775, de eerste twee jaar ad interim. Zijn residentie stond op Sint Eustatius dat in die tijd een belangrijke doorvoerhaven van de WIC was. Onder De Windt werd zelfs suiker van Britse en Franse plantages ingekocht die vervolgens als Statiaanse suiker werd verscheept. Deze liberale handelspraktijken vormden later tijdens de Zevenjarige Oorlog een argument voor de Britten om Nederlandse handelsschepen te confisqueren, omdat deze neutrale schepen goederen van hun aartsvijand Frankrijk zouden "smokkelen".
Jan de Windt ligt samen met zijn echtgenote Alletta van Rincorn begraven op de begraafplaats bij de ruïne van de Hervormde kerk van Sint Eustatius.
