What's Special on today?

Events

1676 – Jamestown is burned to the ground by the forces of Nathaniel Bacon during Bacon's Rebellion.
1778 – The Continental Congress passes the first United States federal budget.
1796 – George Washington's Farewell Address is printed across America as an open letter to the public.
1863 – American Civil War: The first day of the Battle of Chickamauga, in northwestern Georgia, the bloodiest two-day battle of the conflict, and the only significant Confederate victory in the war's Western Theater.
1864 – American Civil War: Union troops under Philip Sheridan defeat a Confederate force commanded by Jubal Early. With over 50,000 troops engaged, it was the largest battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley.
1881 – U.S. President James A. Garfield dies of wounds suffered in a July 2 shooting. Vice President Chester A. Arthur becomes President upon Garfield's death.
1944 – World War II: The Battle of Hürtgen Forest begins. It will become the longest individual battle that the U.S. Army has ever fought.
1952 – The United States bars Charlie Chaplin from re-entering the country after a trip to England. Chaplin was a strong opponent of fascism and even made the movie ‘The Little Dictator” to mock Adolph Hitler. J. Edgar Hoover conducted a smear campaign which led to a series of trials pushed by misleading info from the FBI. Although he was ultimately acquitted, his views of America soured and he moved his family to Switzerland calling the US a “hate-beleaguered atmosphere” and that he “was fed up of America's insults and moral pomposity.”
1982 – Scott Fahlman posts the first documented emoticons :-) and :-( on the Carnegie Mellon University bulletin board system.
1991 – Ötzi the Iceman is discovered in the Alps on the border between Italy and Austria.
2010 – The leaking oil well in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is sealed after blowing open on April 20th.

Birthdays

Deaths

1692 – Giles Corey, American farmer and accused wizard (b. c. 1612) He was accused of appearing as an apparition during the Salem witch trials. He was the only person ‘pressed’ to death due to his refusal to enter a plea, since that was the punishment for refusing to plead. As the sheriff continued to add weight, it took three days to crush him to death and by not entering a plea, he could not be tried. Once he died in custody without a trail, his estate passed on to his heirs, otherwise the state would have confiscated it.
1710 – Ole Rømer, Danish astronomer and instrument maker (b. 1644) In 1676, he made the first quantitative measurements of the speed of light.
1881 – James A. Garfield, American general, lawyer, and politician, and the 20th President of the United States (b. 1831)
1995 – Orville Redenbacher, American businessman, founded his own eponymous brand (b. 1907)

Today is ” International Talk Like a Pirate Day ”!

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (on September 19) is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. An observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello, everyone!" but with "Ahoy, maties!" or "Ahoy, me hearties!". The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

At first an inside joke between two friends, the holiday gained exposure when Baur and Summers sent a letter about their invented holiday to the American syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in 2002. Barry liked the idea and promoted the day, and later appeared in a cameo in their "Drunken Sailor" Sing Along A-Go-Go video. Growing media coverage of the holiday after Barry's column has ensured that this event is now celebrated internationally, and Baur and Summers now sell books and T-shirts related to the theme on their website. Part of the success for the international spread of the holiday has been attributed to non-restriction of the idea or non-trademarking, in effect opening the holiday to creativity and "viral" growth.

Many organizations actually celebrate the day now and it shows up in software and on websites like Google. Going back in 2013, even the State of Michigan recognizes it as an official holiday. But you may still wonder how you too can participate?
- Talk like a pirate the whole day long. Intersperse your speech with grunts and growls and slur your words. Call your friends “matey” and intentionally use bad grammar.
- Watch movies like the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
- Dress up like a swashbuckling pirate!

So Argh me hearties! Go off wit’ ye now an learn the vast secrets of this sacred day that soon be upon us!? Lest you be run thru ye scallywag!

Quote of the day – “ There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island. “ - Walt Disney
