Live Green Lexington has hidden 12 geocaches around the city. Each cache represents a theme about water quality. You will have the chance to learn more about stormwater, pollinator gardens, Reforest the Bluegrass, and the Citizens’ Environmental Academy. Meet Petunia, she is equivalent to the amount of waste a medium size dog produces in one year! That is 250 pounds! By picking up pet waste, we can keep our waters, lawns and streets cleaner!
This cache is hidden inside Jacobson Park, which is over 200 acres of green pastures, forested areas, and a resevoir. Please note that Jacobson Park is open from dawn until dusk, and park attendants may close and lock the front gates. It is highly recommended that you hunt for caches during daylight hours while inside the park. Please park in one of the parking lots and not on the side of the road.
Pet waste is one of those little sources of pollution that can add up to a big problem. When disposed of improperly, human health may be at risk, especially children who play outside or people that garden. This pollutant creates serious harm for us and animals who venture in streams and creeks. Pet waste can harm water quality:
- Decomposing pet waste uses up oxygen that fish and plants need.
- Pet waste contains nutrients that encourage algae to grow in streams.
- Pet waste contains bacteria and parasites that can be harmful to people and animal.
