First 50 Heroes
The Coalville Heroes Series celebrates the first fifty volunteers from our area to take part in the Great War of 1914-18. Each geocache commemorates a real volunteer and describes his activities during the Great War.

Arthur William Hodgetts, known as Dennis, was born in 1897 in Leicester. He lived at 243 Ashby Road Coalville. He was a good footballer and played for Coalville Town, He married Ethel Hoden at Christ Church in 1921. Aged 14 he was an errand boy for a butchers shop and then a miner, after the war he trained to be an electrician with Balfour Beatty. He lost 2 babies. In 1938 he died of electrecution from a human error whilst strapped to an electrical pole. he was created by Stuart Dilks, artist for the exhibition.
