(PT) Areja conta com séculos de história, tendo já sido capital do vasto território denominado de “Cidade d’Anégia ou Areja”. Outrora dedicada à pesca e à agricultura, cada vez mais raras, a sua arquitetura típica ainda hoje é exemplo dessas atividades. Demore-se num passeio pelas ruas estreitas e atente às casas tradicionais de arquitetura rural, mas também aos solares envoltos de quintas. Aqui terá morado o Conde D. Henrique, Senhor do Condado Portucalense.
Provavelmente o maior motivo para o mui nobre senhor ter escolhido Areja para morar, entre outros predicados seria uma paisagem natural de tão rara beleza. Um dos lugares da freguesia de Lomba, Areja, sobe o monte deste o rio até ao cimo da encosta, respirando, cada vez mais alto, o ar puro da localidade. Situada em Gondomar, esta aldeia, já tão próxima do perímetro urbano, é um refúgio natural e merece por isso uma visita. O património espalhado pela encosta que desce até ao rio mostra bem a relevância que o local, nas margens do rio Douro, já teve, nas áreas do comércio e transporte de mercadores. Hoje, continua a ter um cais que permite a acostagem de embarcações de recreio.
A encosta de Areja, que vale a pena percorrer sem pressas, desenvolve-se ao longo do monte e proporciona uma vista deslumbrante. A subida é íngreme mas recompensa: quanto mais alto subir, mais bonita será a paisagem. Cá em baixo, desfrute também das margens frescas do rio. A vida na aldeia continua a respeitar a sua história, mantendo as tradições e os ofícios tradicionais. Numa visita a Areja, não deixe de visitar o monumento à Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, santa protetora das tempestades e outros perigos e, por isso, associada às comunidades piscatórias, situado no Cais de Areja.

Spend some time strolling through the narrow streets and study the rural architecture of the traditional houses as well as the manors on the country estates. Count. D. Henrique, Lord of the County of Portugal, lived here. The slope of Areja, where it is worthwhile taking a leisurely stroll, stretches along the mountain and provides a breathtaking view.
Probably the greatest reason for the noble master to have chosen Areja to live among other predicates would be a natural landscape of such rare beauty. One of the places in the parish of Lomba, Areja, rises up the hill from this river to the top of the slope, breathing, higher and higher, the pure air of the locality. Located in Gondomar, this village, already so close to the urban perimeter, is a natural refuge and therefore deserves a visit. The patrimony spread by the slope that descends to the river shows well the relevance that the place, on the banks of the Douro river, already had, in the areas of the commerce and transport of merchants. Today, it continues to have a wharf that allows the docking of recreational craft.
The climb is steep but rewarding: the higher you go, the more breathtaking is the landscape. Down below, you can also enjoy the cool riverbanks. Life in the village continues to respect its history, maintaining its traditions and traditional crafts. When visiting Areja, be sure to visit the monument to Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, the patron saint providing protection against storms and other dangers and, therefore, associated with the fishing communities at Areja Harbour.
