I suggest you to walk on Salgren Island.
Be careful, this cache can only be done at low tide, be sure to check schedules before.
Salgren Island is part of the Chateaulin leaf and is located in the western part of the Early Precambrian and Paleozoic Armorican Massif, which is between 2 200 and 280 Ma.
The western part of this massif shows the juxtaposition of three large units separated by two major tectonic discontinuities: the North Armorican Shear (NAC) and the South Armorican Shear (CSA).
A north-west Armorican domain (Léon), a deep segment of the Hercynian orogeny, is thus distinguished from north to south, a Central Armorican (or Medio-Armorican) domain mainly occupied by sedimentary terrains of low metamorphism and a southern domain. Armorican consisting of stacked meta-morphic units representing the "inner" part of the orogen. Located in the southwestern part of the Central Armorican domain, the Châteaulin leaf is a key sector of this entity. It offers, from south to north, on the one hand, a section through the Brieuverian substratum and the southern flank of the Armorican median synclinorium (consisting of paleo-zoic terranes ranging from Arenig to Carboniferous) and, on the other hand, on the other hand, a section through the southern granitoids, including the Locronan granite in relation to the metamorphic domain affecting both the Brioverian and the Paleozoic. The Paleozoic rests unconformably on the Briovarian, and a second discordance develops between the Carboniferous and the the underlying Paleozoic. In the absence of benchmark levels in the Brioverian, the Arenig-Brioverian unconformity is not identifiable solely by reading the map, whereas the independence of the Carboniferous from the underlying lands is underlined by stratigraphic contacts taking place at various levels of the Devonian ranging, according to the localities, Schists and quartzites from Plougastel (Pridoli or Lochkovien basai) to the Schists of Traonliors (Frasnian).
Geological reminder:
Tectonic deformation studies of the lithosphere. Rocks subjected to high stresses deform:
• either continuously, we speak of continuous deformation, ductile behavior. One is then in the field of flexible tectonics: creases and folds.
• or discontinuously, it is called discontinuous deformation, breaking behavior. One is then in the area of the frangible tectonics: faults.
Features of a fold:
- isopaque, anisopaque: A fold is isopach if the thickness of the layers is constant, anisopaque in the opposite case.
- right, out of place or lying down: A fold is straight if its axial plane is vertical; it is dejected, even spilled, if its axial plane is oblique; and he is lying down if his axial plane is almost horizontal. [Recumbent fold - Saint Clement, Hautes-Alpes, France [1] [archive]
- open, tight or isoclinal: A fold is open if the angle between its flanks is very important, tight if the angle is small and isoclinal if its sidewalls are parallel.
.
To validate your visit to the site, send me, although specifying the name of the earthcache, your answers by e-mail (from my profile, or email [Message Center] from geocaching.com) the following questions . You can log "Found it," I will contact you if necessary:
Let's go to the waypoint WP001:
WP01 - Q1 - First of all, at your feet (blue zone), you can observe very characteristic folds. What is this type of fold?
WP01 - Q2 - Can you see other places nearby?
WP01 - Q3 - Looking away from the red zone, can you see any creases or faults?
Now approach the waypoint WP002 , this is a close-up view of the red zone:
WP02 - Q4 - Are the folds isopach or anisopaque?
A photo of the site, in black and white, will be welcome, although optional.
