Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Ci En Pagoda of Sun Moon Lake!

Want to see an amazing Panoramic View of Sun Moon Lake?

Want to get a little bit of some exercise on around this beautiful area?

How about a little climb up to the top of a Pagoda for one breathtaking view?

Come to a Pagoda atop a mountain to see why Sun Moon Lake is named such.

Introduction to Ci En Pagoda

The Ci En Pagoda is located on the south side of Sun Moon Lake, situated atop Shabalan Mountain (沙巴闌山), also known as Er Long Mountain (二龍山). The tower itself is 46 meters high, and if you go to the highest point of the tower, you will be exactly 1,000 meters above sea level. The tower began construction in 1969, being completed two years later in 1971. The tower was built as a commemorative monument to Presidents Chiang-Kai Shek's mother.

Standing at the highest level of the tower provides the visitor with a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the lake. It is here where one can understand the origin of the name Sun Moon Lake. Looking out in one particular direction, you can see how the lake reflects the outline of a sun shape, and looking out in another particular direction, you can notice how the lake becomes a little bit more narrow looking, taking on the shape of a crescent moon, thus giving Sun Moon Lake her name.

Ci En Pagoda is definitely a hidden gem atop a mountain here at Sun Moon Lake.

Logging Requirements:

Please Note: The surrounding area where The Pagoda is located can be visited at all times, however, The Pagoda itself is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so please plan accordingly to visit The Pagoda during opening hours if you wish to complete this Virtual.

(As stated in the Description above, when you stand at the top level of the Pagoda, you can see why Sun Moon Lake is called Sun Moon Lake, so . . .)

In order to log Found It! on this cache, please fulfill the following tasks:

1. Walk up to the top level of the Pagoda and look out to view the lake. Find which part of the lake you believe to be the sun and which part to be the moon. Then take and post two pictures:

  • The first picture to show the part of Sun Moon Lake you believe to be the "sun"
  • And the second picture to show the part of Sun Moon Lake you believe to be the "moon".

2. In both photos, please have something identifying you in those two photos. For example, you could hold up a trackable and take a picture of that trackable to be in the frame of the two photos. Or you could hold up a special trinket you have or even hold up a piece of paper with your Geocaching name on it. Or you could simply take a selfie. If you choose to take an "object style" photo, just make sure that that same object is in both photos. Be creative with it and have fun! After you’ve taken the required two photos, please post those two photos to your log in order to fulfill the logging requirements for this Virtual and claim a "Found It!" for this Virtual Cache.

Please Note: If weather conditions do not allow for a clear view of the lake, please still complete the two requirements as outlined above but instead just “guess” where the Sun will be and where the Moon will be, snapping the required "guessing" photos of course.

Also, after completing the "two guessing photos" please complete this additional logging task as well:

Post a photo of you ringing the bell. (You can of course hide your face from view.)

Again, this additional logging task is NOT a substition for Tasks 1. and 2. above so make sure to still complete Tasks 1. and 2. above please.

3. Optional: Take a photo of yourself somewhere inside the Pagoda. (You don't have to show your face if you don't want.)

P.S. You are more than welcome to post more than the required two (or three) photos so please do share the beauty of Sun Moon Lake if you would like.

Just like with Traditional Caches where you must sign the logsheet to log a "Found It!" online, this Virtual requires you to fulfill specific tasks in order to earn that smiley as well. Please respect the tasks and understand what you must do in order to log a "Found It!" online for this Virtual. Please read the Logging Tasks thoroughly and carefully, and remember to post the required TWO photos. Failure to fulfill the logging requirements for this Virtual will result in the deletion of your log. I understand that travel can be a little bit tiring at times but remember to plan accordingly if you wish to log this Virtual. Most importantly, have fun!
