Caminito - República de La Boca Virtual Cache

Located in La Boca, the Caminito (little path, in Spanish) is a street museum of colourful painted houses typical of the immigrant dwellings that came to chracterise this portside area towards the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century.

The Caminito followed the route of an old stream that once flowed into the Riachuelo, and later, after the river dried up, formed part of a railroad route. After the closure of the railroad, the street was largely abandoned until in the 1950s a group of neighbours decided to regenerate the area and local artist Benito Quinquela Martín began using the tenements as his canvas.

Today, there are several works by Argentine artists incorporated as part of the street museum and the Caminito has become a favourite with visitors to the city. Several restaurants offer tango and folk dance shows and street fills with artists offering original crafts and paintings.

The tenement buildings made of wood and sheet metal are typical of the conventillos, precarious, communal dwellings built by Genoan immigrants starting in the late 19th century. Many dwellings are built on raised foundations due to frequent floods in the past.

Caminito es uno de los paseos más emblemáticos de la ciudad y de los atractivos imperdibles para quienes lo visitan.
Con sus conventillos típicos de chapa del barrio de La Boca, que muestran sus paredes pintadas de distintos colores, es también un museo a cielo abierto de casi 150 metros de longitud. Su trazado sinuoso se debe a que sigue el cauce de un arroyo que fluyó hasta principios del siglo XX. La zona era conocido popularmente como "Puntin" (diminutivo de "puente" en dialecto genovés ).

Durante mucho tiempo formó parte del recorrido del ferrocarril a Ensenada (a una hora de Buenos Aires) hasta que en 1928 el ramal fue clausurado y la vía se convirtió en un callejón abandonado. Fue gracias a la iniciativa de varios vecinos, entre los que se encontraba el pintor Benito Quinquela Martín (uno de los principales benefactores del barrio y cuya obra se conmemora a través del colorido de las casas de La Boca), que en los años 1950 se recuperó el terreno para convertirlo en un paseo peatonal y en una calle museo, en la que de a poco se fueron sumando obras de distintos artistas.

En 1959, por iniciativa de Quinquela Martín, se lo bautizó con el nombre del célebre tango “Caminito”, compuesto por Juan de Dios Filiberto y Gabino Coria Peñaloza y estrenado en los carnavales de 1926.

Curiosidades

¿Sabías que la letra del tango “Caminito”, compuesta por Gabino Coria Peñaloza, fue originalmente un poema escrito por el mismo autor en 1903 en homenaje a un sendero de la localidad de Olta, en la provincia de La Rioja?
