Idílio ou Beijo Eterno
Essa é uma história de amor cheia de mudanças. Quem passa em frente à Faculdade de Direito da USP, mais conhecida como Faculdade do Largo de São Francisco, e vê uma escultura de uma índia e um homem se beijando, não imagina como foi difícil que deixassem em paz o simpático casal.
Bem, a história dessa obra de arte é dividida em partes. Literalmente. Principalmente porque hoje o que conhecemos como “Beijo Eterno” ou “O idílio”, é na verdade parte de uma escultura maior, encomendada ao artista sueco William Zadig pelos estudantes da faculdade de Direito para homenagear o poeta Olavo Bilac. Depois de pronta, a escultura foi instalada em uma praça na avenida Paulista.
Os cidadãos odiaram a “obra de arte”. Os mais exaltados escreviam para os jornais reclamando que a escultura atrapalhava o trânsito e dizendo que nunca tinham visto nada tão feio na cidade de São Paulo.
Diante de tanta reclamação, em 1936 a prefeitura resolveu desmontar a escultura e guardar a parte escandalosa (a parte dos namorados) em um depósito. Vinte anos depois, o prefeito Jânio Quadros, que gostava da escultura, resolveu colocar na rua novamente o casal de namorados, dessa vez em uma praça do bairro do Cambuci. E um novo escândalo aconteceu. Um morador que levava a sua filha para escola, ao se deparar com a escultura do casal apaixonado escreveu uma carta indignada para todos os jornais da cidade, dizendo que aquela imagem era um ataque à inocência de sua filha. Novamente o casal foi enviado para o depósito.
Dez anos depois, o prefeito Faria Lima resolveu aproveitar a inauguração dos jardins do túnel 9 de Julho e mandou colocar o casal de namorados para viver ali, em paz. Novamente a polêmica ressurgiu, dessa vez graças a um vereador que alegou que aquela escultura era “obra do demônio, um verdadeiro escândalo”.
Cansados de tanta polêmica, os estudantes da Faculdade de Direito, que lá no começo da história tinham pago e encomendado a obra, resolveram cuidar do que era deles. Na calada da noite juntaram-se em bom número, sequestraram o casal do jardim do túnel 9 de Julho e a levaram para frente do prédio de Direito, no Lgo. São Francisco. Graças ao rapto, o casal pôde viver feliz para sempre. E sem mais mudanças de endereço.

Idílio or The Eternal Kiss
This is a love story full of change. Those who pass in front of USP Law School, better known as the Largo de San Francisco College, and see a sculpture of an Indian woman and a man kissing, cannot imagine how difficult it was to leave the friendly couple alone.
Well, the history of this work of art is divided into parts. Literally. Mainly because today what we know as the “Eternal Kiss” or “The Idyll” is actually part of a larger sculpture commissioned by Swedish artist William Zadig by law school students to honor poet Olavo Bilac. Once completed, the sculpture was installed in a square on Paulista Avenue.
Citizens hated the “work of art”. The most exalted wrote to the newspapers complaining that the sculpture disturbed the traffic and saying that they had never seen anything so ugly in the city of São Paulo.
Faced with so much complaint, in 1936 the city decided to dismantle the sculpture and keep the scandalous part (the part of lovers) in a warehouse. Twenty years later, Mayor Jânio Quadros, who liked the sculpture, decided to put the couple back in the street, this time in a square in the Cambuci neighborhood. And a new scandal has happened. A resident who was taking his daughter to school when he came across the sculpture of the couple in love wrote an indignant letter to all the newspapers in the city, saying that this image was an attack on his daughter's innocence. Again the couple was sent to the deposit.
Ten years later, Mayor Faria Lima decided to take advantage of the opening of the 9 de Julho tunnel gardens and ordered the couple to live there in peace. Again the controversy resurfaced, this time thanks to a councilman who claimed that this sculpture was "the work of the devil, a true scandal."
Tired of such controversy, the law school students, who had paid for and commissioned the work early in history, decided to take care of their own. In the dead of night they gathered in good numbers, kidnapped the couple from the 9th of July tunnel garden, and took her to the front of the Law building in Lgo. San Francisco. Thanks to the abduction, the couple could live happily ever after. And no more address changes.
