Perto do local onde o Infante D. Henrique, em meados do séc. XV, mandou edificar uma igreja sobre a invocação de Sta. Maria de Belém, quis o rei D. Manuel I construir um grande Mosteiro. Para perpetuar a memória do Infante, pela sua grande devoção a Nossa Senhora e crença em S. Jerónimo, D. Manuel I decidiu fundar em 1496, o Mosteiro de Sta. Maria de Belém, perto da cidade de Lisboa, junto ao rio Tejo. Doado aos monges da Ordem de S. Jerónimo, é hoje vulgarmente conhecido por Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.
O Mosteiro é um referente cultural que não escapou nem aos artistas, cronistas ou viajantes durante os seus cinco séculos de existência. Foi acolhimento e sepultura de reis, mais tarde de poetas. Hoje é admirado por cada um de nós, não apenas como uma notável peça de arquitetura, mas como parte integrante da nossa cultura e identidade.
O Mosteiro dos Jerónimos foi declarado Monumento Nacional em 1907 e, em 1983, a UNESCO classificou-o como "Património Cultural de toda a Humanidade".
É hoje uma das mais importantes atrações turísticas de Portugal, contando um total de 807.854 visitantes em 2014, 944.000 em 2015 e 1.166.793 em 2017. Em 2022, este monumento foi o mais visitado em Portugal, recebeu 870.321 entradas…

King Manuel I had the idea of erecting a large monastery close to the site where Henry the Navigator had built a church dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém in the 15th century. With a view to perpetuating the memory of Henry and acknowledging his own great devotion to Our Lady and St. Jerome, Manuel I chose to establish the Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém on a site just outside Lisbon on the banks of the River Tagus. The monastery was given to the Order of St. Jerome, which is why it was given the name of Jerónimos (or Hieronymite) Monastery.
The Monastery is a cultural reference point that has attracted artists, chroniclers and travellers in the course of its five centuries of existence. It received, and became a burial place, for kings, and later poets. Today it is admired by one and all, not only as a remarkable piece of architecture but also as integral part of Portuguese culture and identity.
The Hieronymite Monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907 and in 1983 UNESCO classified it as a "World Heritage Site".
