Het Steen, het oudste bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen, werd gebouwd tussen 1200 en 1225 als poortgebouw van destijds de Antwerpse burcht. Binnen de Burcht bevonden zich belangrijke instellingen zoals de Vierschaar (de voormalige rechtbank), de Sint-Walburgiskerk, het Reuzenhuis, het Steen, de Werf en de Vismarkt. Rond 1520, ten tijde van Karel V, werd het poortgebouw van de burcht grondig verbouwd en noemde men het voortaan "'s-Heeren Steen". In 1549 schonk Karel V het gebouw aan de stad, die het tot 1828 in eigendom had. Van 1303 tot 1823 werd het gebouw als gevangenis gebruikt, daarna diende het als tehuis voor invalide soldaten. Nadat de overheid het gebouw in 1827 had opgeëist, werd het een jaar later aan een houtzager verkocht. In 1842 kocht de stad het gebouw echter weer terug. Een groot deel van de burcht werd in de jaren 1880 afgebroken toen men de kades recht trok en de Schelde verbreedde. Het overgebleven gebouw werd hierna simpelweg "Het Steen" genoemd. Toch werd meteen ook in 1889-1890 een nieuwe vleugel gebouwd en ook andere delen van het gebouw verbouwd. In 1862 opperde Pieter Génard - als lid van het Antwerpse Comité der briefwisselende leden der Koninklijke Commissie van Monumenten - om in elke provincie een oudheidkundig museum op te richten. Volgens hem was Het Steen de geschikte plaats in Antwerpen hiervoor. De stad steunde het voorstel, zodat door architect Kennes begonnen werd met een restauratie. Op 14 augustus 1864 kon zo het museum opengaan. Dit museum werd in 1952 vervangen door het Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum, dat echter al meteen van 1953 tot 1958 ontoegankelijk was door verbouwingswerken. Het binnengedeelte van dit museum sloot uiteindelijk de deuren op 28 december 2008. De collectie van het Scheepvaartmuseum werd vanaf 2010 overgeplaatst naar het nieuwgebouwde Museum aan de Stroom. Het gebouw werd in 2012 herbestemd tot "HETSTEEN der wijzen", "een actief vragenhuis voor denkers, dromers en doeners". Voor het ogenblik zijn er aan Het Steen grondige renovatie werken. In 2020 zal Het Steen de toegangspoort vormen tot Antwerpen en dienst doen als cruiseterminal, onthaalcentrum en interactief belevingsparcours. Het Steen (The Stone), the oldest preserved building in Antwerp, was built between 1200 and 1225 as the gatehouse of Antwerp's castle at the time. Within the castle there were important institutions such as the Vierschaar (the former court), the Sint-Walburgiskerk, the Giant House, the Steen, the Werf and the Vismarkt. Around 1520, at the time of Charles V, the gatehouse of the castle was thoroughly renovated and from now on it was called "'s-Heeren Steen". In 1549, Charles V donated the building to the city, which it owned until 1828. From 1303 to 1823 the building was used as a prison, then it served as a home for disabled soldiers. According to him, The Stone was the right place in Antwerp for this. The city supported the proposal, so that architect Kennes started a restoration. The museum was thus able to open on 14 August 1864. This museum was replaced in 1952 by the National Maritime Museum, which was immediately inaccessible from renovation work from 1953 to 1958. The inner part of this museum finally closed its doors on December 28, 2008. From 2010 the Maritime Museum collection was transferred to the newly built Museum on the River. The building was redesignated in 2012 as "The Stone of the wise", "an active question house for thinkers, dreamers and doers". There are currently major renovation works on Het Steen. In 2020, Het Steen will be the gateway to Antwerp and serve as a cruise terminal, reception center and interactive experience trail. Antwerp and its history are central to the experience center.
