Geocache Description:

Stand where the river meets the sea - STORMS RIVER SUSPENSION BRIDGE

The suspension bridge that hangs over the red-brown waters of the Storms River Mouth spans 77 metres and remains one of the most popular tourist attractions of the Tsitsikamma region of the Eastern Cape

Situated within the Tsitsikamma National Park, it was originally built in 1969, but has since been rebuilt twice by San-Parks to ensure its stability and safety. It hangs just seven metres above the churning waters of the river as it enters the foamy Indian Ocean. At this point the river mouth itself is 69m wide and the water 9m deep. The bridge is substantially stronger then the initial bridge and can carry a maximum capacity of 2250kg. (2 and a quarter tons!) Standing at GZ you are directly above where the river meets the sea. Looking up river you will see the magnificent Storms River Gorge.

Two shorter suspension bridges were added in 2009. These sections are 50.5m and 39.5m in length respectively. Standing on these bridges you can hear the boulders rolling over each other as the sea water retreats.

The pathway leading to the suspension bridge covers 900 metres of the Tsitsikamma forest. A number of the trees are clearly marked and you will see the iconic Yellowwood, Blackwood and Knobwood. You are also sure to encounter some “Dassies” along the way.

There are plenty of steps to negotiate, but it is still an easy walk, particularly if taken slowly.

How to log this virtual:

1. Close to GZ there is a yellow lock attached to the fencing on the bridge. Message or Email me the names of the people on the lock as well as where they come from.

2. Attach a picture of yourself on the bridge. In the foreground of the picture, your caching name or the date written on something. Unfortunately, this is needed to prevent the armchair logging of this cache.
