[LV] Līdzīgi kā daudzām Hanzas savienības un citām Eiropas pilsētām, viduslaikos Rīgai uzbruka ne tikai ārvalstu armijas, bet arī nāvējošas infekcijas slimības, piemēram, mēris, holēra, lepra, tuberkuloze, vienkāršas bakteriālas brūču infekcijas un daudzas citas. Tajā pašā laikā Rīga deva ieguldījumu šo infekcijas slimību apkarošanā. Piemēram, Rīgā 1836. gada 16. decembrī ir dzimis vācbaltiešu ķirurgs Ernsts fon Bergmanis. Bergmanis ir ķirurģiskās aseptikas pamatlicējs. Ķirurģiskās aseptikas mērķis ir novērst ķirurģiskas brūces inficēšanos ar patogēniem mikroorganismiem, kas ir pamatā smagām infekcijām un var pat būt pacienta nāves iemesls.
[EN] Similar to many Hanseatic league and other European cities in medieval times Riga was attacked not only by foreign armies but also by deadly infectious diseases like plague, cholera, leprosy, tuberculosis, simple bacterial wound infections and many others. At the same time Riga contributed to fighting these infectious diseases. For example, Ernst von Bergmann, a Baltic German surgeon was born in Riga back in December 16th, 1836. Bergmann is the founder of surgical aseptic - methods aimed to prevent surgical wounds from contamination caused by harmful pathogenic microorganisms.
[LV] Ēka, kurā dzimis Bergmanis diemžēl nav saglabājusies. Noteikti ir vērts papētīt šobrīd redzamo jūgendstila celti, kura uzbūvēta 1901. gadā.
Bergmanis bija pirmais ārsts, kurš ieviesa ķirurģisko instrumentu termisko sterilizāciju, tādējādi ievērojami samazinot infekciju skaitu ķirurģijā. Viņš arī izmantoja tvaikos sterilizētu pārsēju, pierādot šādas metodes pārākumu, salīdzinot ar pārsēju ķīmisko apstrādi.
Viņš bija arī viens no pirmajiem ārstiem, kas sāka lietot mūsdienās tik labi zināmo medicīnas darbinieku balto halātu (Wikipedia).
Dienā, kad lasāt šo slēpņa aprakstu, varam pieņemt, ka kopš ieviešanas praksē aseptiskās metodes ir izglābušas dzīvību miljoniem cilvēku visā pasaulē, kuri būtu nomiruši no ķirurģisko brūču infekcijām. Pateicoties aseptikai, ķirurģija mūsdienās ir kļuvusi par drošu ārstniecības metodi.
Tomēr šis drošais periods diemžēl drīz var beigties, jo jau tagad pasaulē ir sastopami jauni spēcīgi mikrobi, kuri ir izturīgi (rezistenti) pret antiseptiskām vielām un antibiotikām. Tāpēc pagaidām cenšamies izbaudīt dzīvi, meklējam slēpņus un rūpējamies par mūsu skaisto planētu Zeme!
[EN] Unfortunately, the building where Bergmann was born has not survived. The Art Nouveau building you see today, built in 1901, is definitely worth exploring.
Bergmann was the first physician to introduce heat sterilization of surgical instruments, thus greatly reducing the number of infections in surgery. He also used steam sterilized dressing material, demonstrating its superiority to chemical antisepsis.
He was also an early adopter of the "white coat" (Wikipedia).
By the day you are reading this geocache description we may assume that aseptic methods saved millions of people worldwide from dying of wound and other infections because surgery became so safe method.
