Storforsen - Forsarnas drottning 

 Piteälven, en av Sveriges nationalälvar, rinner tio mil genom Älvsbyns kommun. Av älvens framfart har trakten fått benämningen Forsarnas land. Dess drottning är Storforsen som bjuder på ett naturscenario utan motstycke.

Med en fallhöjd på 82 meter är Storforsen Europas största obundna fors. Delar av området är handikappanpassat och den skummande forsen kan upplevas på hisnande nära håll. Från de mäktiga strömmarna promenerar du till lugnare bäckar som strilar fram mellan jättegrytor och raviner. Njut av din medhavda matsäck vid de mysiga grillplatserna eller ta ett svalkande dopp i någon av de badbassänger som naturen skapat.

Även under vintern trollbinder Storforsen sina besökare, då iskristaller bildar fantasifulla formationer. På försommaren nås forsen av smältvattnet från fjällen och är då som störst.

Invid Storforsen finns ett skogsbruks- och flottningsmuseum med gamla timmerkojor, tjärdal och kolmila som ger sina besökare en inblick i äldre tiders liv och försörjning i de norrländska skogs- och älvområdena.

Uppströms Storforsen ligger Brudforsen och några mil nedströms finner du det vackra vattenfallet Fällforsen. Fallet är elva meter högt, har en laxtrappa och är en populär plats för fiske och friluftsliv.

Älvsbyborna har ett brett kulturellt intresse med stor spännvidd. Föreningslivet är starkt och säkert finns det evenemang och aktiviteter som passar just dig och din familj. Vid Storforsen arrangeras även uppskattade musik och kulturevenemang.

För att du ska få logga den här virtuella cachen krävs att du gör följande:

1. Räkna antalet ljusstolpar med vita glasklot som är placerade vid räcket på rampen som leder fram till forsen. Börja räkna vid rampens start ända fram till cachens koordinater framme vid forsen. Antal ljusstolpar = A

2. Läs informationsskylten om Piteälven och Storforsen vid cachens koordinater och svara på följande fråga: Hur många meter faller älven under forsens sista 600 meter? Antal meter = B

3. Räkna ut vad XX blir. A + B = XX

Storforsen - The greatest of falls

 The Pite River, which flows for some 100 km through the Älvsbyn region, is one of Sweden's last unspoilt rivers.

The large numbers of waterfalls and rapids which characterize the river have led to this area being known as the land of the waterfalls. With a total fall of 82m, the rapids at Storforsen are the largest in Europe and by far the most impressive sight in the region.

The area around Storforsen is provided with footpath sand walkways that allow the visitor to look at the rapids safely from the very edge of the river. The rapids are at their most impressive in late spring when melted snow from the mountains fills the river, but even during the winter, when ice seals almost everything, Storforsen retains its majesty. Away from the main river it is possible to walk amongst smaller streams, natural pools and falls. There are numerous locations where it is possible to light a fire to enjoy freshly grilled food and the long summer days to the full.

Adjacent to the falls is a museum dedicated to forestry. Here it is possible to see how life was lived when the rivers and forests were of great importance in the region.

Upstream from Storforsen lies another set of rapids,  Brudforsen, whilst some 10 km downstream is the equally impressive Fällforsen. This fall, with a height of 11 meters, is popular with fishermen.

The people of Älvsbyn participate in a wide range of cultural and social activities, often arranged through clubs and association.

To log this virtual cache, you will have to do the following tasks:

1. Count the number of light poles with white glass globes located at the railing on the ramp leading to the rapid. Start counting at the start of the ramp and stop at the coordinates of the cache. Number of light poles = A

2. Read the information sign about the Pite River and Storforsen at the cache's coordinates and answer the following question: How many meters does the river fall during the last 600 meters of the rapids? Number of meters = B

3. Calculate what XX will be. A + B= XX

4. Send an email to storforsenXX@gmail.com and enter your nickname in the subject line. But you have to replace XX in the above email address with your calculated number! If you answered correctly, you would receive an email back (Auto-reply).

5. Take a picture of you, or of a part of you, with Storforsen as a background and add the picture in your log!
