De Kropemann
Der Kropemann ist eine vielschichtige Sagengestalt, die auf uralte mythologische Vorbilder zurueckgeht und sich in die weit gefaecherte Kategorie der Wassergeister einreihen laesst. Vielerorts in Luxemburg sowie in allen Laendern Europas kennt man fantastische Wasserwesen der verschiedensten Formen, die alle mit unserem Redinger Kropemann verwandt sind. Wenn der Kropemann heute ganz besonders als Symbol der Attert und Wahrzeichen des Kantonalhauptortes Redingen gilt, dann erklaert sich dies dadurch, dass man sich hier intensiver als anderswo mit dem ethnographischen und kulturellen Hintergrund dieses Fabelwesens befasst hat. Unbestreitbar ist aber auch die Tatsache, dass die Praesenz dieses Wasserspuks an der Attert frueher auffallend haeufig war. Ueberall konnte man ihn hier antreffen : beim Schummers-Wehr, beim Scherches-Buer, beim Biangs-Weiher, beim Heihe Stee usw. Laengst haben die Erziehungsmethoden geaendert und niemand braucht mehr Angst vor dem Kropemann zu haben. Heute sind die negativen Seiten dieses beaengstigenden Wassergeistes alle vergessen und nur mehr sein positives Wesen ist geblieben. So erscheint er als Beschützer der Naturlandschaft des Atterttales und Waechter über die oekologische Integritaet des Lebensraumes « Wasser ». Eine aehnliche Funktion hatte der Kropemann frueher auch schon, musste er doch aufpassen, dass niemand sich an der Flora des Bachufers vergriff oder die Dorfbrunnen verschmutzte.

De Kropemann
The Kropemann is a multi-layered mythical figure, which goes back to ancient mythological models and can be classified in the wide-ranging category of water spirits. In many places in Luxembourg as well as in all European countries one knows fantastic water creatures of the most different forms, which are all related to our Redinger Kropemann. If the Kropemann today particularly as symbol of the Attert and landmarks of the Kantonalhauptortes Redingen applies, then this explains itself by the fact that one here more intensively than elsewhere concerned with the ethnographic and cultural background of this mythical creature. But it is also undeniable that the presence of this waterpunk on the Attert used to be remarkably common. Everywhere one could find him here: at the Schummers weir, at the Scherches-Buer, at the Biangs-Weiher, at the Héihe Stee etc. The educational methods have long since changed and nobody needs to be more afraid of the Kropemann. Today, the negative aspects of this frightening water spirit are all forgotten and only its positive nature has remained. So he appears as protector of the natural landscape of the Attert valley and guardian of the ecological integrity of the habitat «water». The Kropemann had a similar function in the past, as he had to be careful that nobody bothered with the flora of the riverbanks or polluted the village wells.

Le Kropemann
Le Kropemann est une figure mythique a plusieurs niveaux, qui remonte a des modeles mythologiques anciens et peut etre classee dans la vaste categorie des esprits des eaux. Dans de nombreux endroits au Luxembourg ainsi que dans tous les pays europeens, on connait des creatures aquatiques fantastiques sous les formes les plus diverses, qui sont toutes liees a notre Redinger Kropemann. Si le Kropemann est particulierement utilise aujourd'hui comme symbole de l'Attert et comme symbole de la ville cantonale Redingen, cela s'explique par le fait que l'on s'interesse ici plus intensement qu'ailleurs au contexte ethnographique et culturel de cette creature mythique. Mais il est egalement indeniable que la presence de ce mytique sur l'Attert etait remarquablement commune. On pouvait le trouver partout: au barrage Schummers, au Scherches-Buer, au Biangs-Weiher, au Heihe Stee, etc. Les methodes pedagogiques ont changer depuis longtemps et personne n'a besoin d'avoir plus peur du Kropemann. Aujourd'hui, les aspects negatifs de cet esprit d'eau effrayant sont tous oublies et seul son caractere positif est rester. Il apparait ainsi en tant que protecteur du paysage naturel de la vallee de l'Attert et gardien de l'integriter ecologique de l'habitat de l'eau. Le Kropemann avait une fonction similaire dans le passer, car il devait veiller a ce que personne ne se soucie de la flore des rives du fleuve ou pollue les puits du village.
