Geocache Description:

"O Prego Dourado"

1 - Qual o diametro do Prego Dourado?

2 - Em redor do Prego Dourado podes observar fosseis? Em caso afirmativo quais?

3 - Qual o nome do local onde te encontras?

"The Golden Spike"

The county of Peniche has an important geological heritage of international relevance. The limestone cliffs bordering the entire Peniche Peninsula tell a continuous history, about 25 million years old, of the geological evolution of the Lower Jurassic of Portugal (between 200 and 175 million years old). A story imprinted in the rocks through fossils of marine invertebrates, when the Iberian Peninsula was very close to the northern region of the American continent.

In this context, the location of Ponta do Trovão, located on the northern façade of the Peniche Peninsula, is unanimously considered by the international scientific community to have the best worldwide record of the transition between Pliensbaquiano-Toarciano (Lower Jurassic floors) .

This recognition was reflected in the December 2014 classification by the International Commission on Stratigraphy of the UNESCO-protected International Union on Geological Sciences of the Ponta do Trovão website as the Toarciano (Lower Jurassic) Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP).

With the sponsorship of the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the International Subcommission on Jurassic Stratigraphy, represented by Professors Stanley Finney and Stephen Hesselbo, a "Golden Spike" corresponding to the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point ("Golden Spike") was held at Peniche. GSSP) of Bajociano and Toarciano, respectively.

For the ceremony of recognition of the geological importance of this place contributed greatly the research carried out by teachers and students of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Coimbra, namely by Professors Maria Helena Henriques and Luís Vítor Duarte.

It should be noted that in Figueira da Foz, in Cape Mondego, there is also another Golden Spike.

To claim the found of this Virtual cache, you must submit the answers to the following questions:

1 - What is the diameter of the Golden Spike?

2 - Around the Golden Spike can you observe fossils? If so which ones?

3 - What is the name of the place where you are?

4 - This location is located on which facade of the Peniche Peninsula?

5 - It is considered by the international scientific community to have the best worldwide record of the transition between which time frames?

After submitting responses, you can register the found of this Virtual Cache. Your log must be accompanied by a photo that identifies you with the Golden Spike or the Plate.

"Le Clou d’Or"
