Der Wiener Zentralfriedhof wurde 1874 eröffnet und zählt mit einer Fläche von fast 2,5 km² und rund 330.000 Grabstellen zu den größten Friedhofsanlagen Europas. Er gehört aufgrund seiner vielen Ehrengräber, der Jugendstil-Bauwerke und des weitläufigen Areals zu den besonderen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt Wien (© Wikipedia)
Das ist Grund genug für einen kurzen Virtual Cache, wobei ich erwähnen möchte, dass mehrere andere Caches sich im Areal befinden. Darunter sind auch ganz tolle Multis, bei denen man den Friedhof gut kennenlernt. Die Aufgaben hier sind ein Foto und drei Zahlen, die es zu recherchieren gilt. Die Stationen sind leicht zu finden, wenn man dem Listing folgt.
Betreten wir also den Friedhof beim Tor 2 und steuern gleich die Gräber an, die viele Besucher und Touristen interessieren. Mache ein Foto vor dem Grabmal von Beethoven mit Deinem GPS und / oder von Dir und lade es mit dem Log hoch. Das Grabmal muss natürlich auf dem Foto sein. Das ist Aufgabe 1. Gleich daneben siehst Du die Gräber von Franz Schubert und Johann Strauß, ein wenig Herumschauen und Du wirst die Namen vieler Prominente vergangener Jahrhunderte sehen.
Ein Stückchen weiter steht die imposante Karl-Borromäus-Kirche als ein Beispiel von bedeutender Architektur im Friedhof. Biege um 90° nach links ab und Du gelangst bald zu einer der vielen Gedenkstätten. Eine Fläche mit drei Säulen ist den Opfern des Juli 1927 gewidmet. Daneben siehst Du eine Wiese mit trauernden Frauen, die links von einer Mauer begrenzt ist, die in einer Kurvenform höher wird. Rechts neben dem höchsten Punkt der Mauer steht die Statue eines Mannes. Gehe links bei der Mauer vorbei und versuche auf die Rückseite der männlichen Statue zum Text „DEN OPFERN FÜR EIN FREIES ÖSTERREICH“ zu gelangen. Wie viele Stufen hast Du dabei zu überwinden (A). Anmerkung für Cacher im Rollstuhl: Die Anzahl lässt sich auch von der asphaltierten Straße aus erkennen.
Der Zentralfriedhof beherbergt auch spezielle Abschnitte. Wenn Du am Weg weitergehst, dann ist links 35B Babyfriedhof. Dieser Abschnitt berührt mich immer sehr, die Gräber sind gestaltet von Eltern, die sich sehr auf das Kind gefreut haben, das aber nicht oder nicht lange auf der Welt war. Inmitten ist eine Gartenlaube. Wie viele Bänke siehst Du da? (B)
Jetzt sind es nur wenige Schritte zur Gruppe 40, ein weiterer Abschnitt an Ehrengräber. Dort ist auch das Grab von Falco. Auch wenn das Grab imposant ist, Du wirst im Friedhof viele Gräber – auch weniger prominenter Personen - finden, die etwas auffälliger gestaltet sind. Gleich gegenüber dem Grab von Falco, auf der anderen Seite der Wiese, ist zum Beispiel ein Grab mit einem kleinen Löwen darauf. Wer ist hier begraben? Nimm die Anzahl der Buchstaben vom Nachnamen (C).

Das war jetzt nur eine kleine Stichprobe, gehe länger durch den Friedhof, gehe vielleicht die Stationen eines Multis ab. Und Du wirst sehen, dass der Zentralfriedhof ein einzigartiger Naturraum ist. Hier leben Rehe, Hasen, sogar eine Imkerei ist hier zu finden. Viel Spaß und ein wenig Besinnung!

The Vienna Central Cemetery was opened in 1874 and with an area of almost 2.5 km² and about 330,000 grave sites is one of the largest cemetery complexes in Europe. It is one of the special sights of Vienna. This is due to its many honorary graves, the Art Nouveau buildings and the spacious area.
That's reason enough for a short virtual cache, though I'd like to mention that several other caches are in the area. Among them are also great multis where you get to know the cemetery well. The tasks here are a photo and three numbers to find out. The stages are easy to find if you follow the listing.
So let us enter the cemetery at gate 2 and head for the graves which attract many visitors and tourists. Take a picture in front of Beethoven's tomb with your GPS and / or yourself and upload it with the log. Of course the tomb must be in the photo .This is task 1. Right next to it you can see the graves of Franz Schubert and Johann Strauss. A little looking around and you will see the names of many celebrities of past centuries.
A little further on is the imposing church of Karl Borromäus as an example of important architecture within the cemetery. Turn 90 ° to the left and you will soon reach one of the many memorial sites. An area with three columns is dedicated to the victims of July 1927. Next to it you see a meadow of mourning women, bounded on the left by a wall that becomes higher in a curve. To the right of the highest point of the wall stands the statue of a man. The central cemetery also houses special sections. If you continue on the way then section 35B baby cemetery is on the left. This section always touches me deeply, the graves are designed by parents who have been looking forward to have a child but that was not or not long alive. In the middle is a bower. How many benches do you see? (B)
Now it's only a few steps to group 40 which is another section of honorary graves. There is also the grave of Falco. Even if the tomb is imposing, you will find many graves in the cemetery - even less prominent people - that are conspicuous. For example just opposite Falco's grave, on the other side of the meadow, is a tomb with a small lion on it. Who is buried here? Take the number of letters from the last name (C).
