Vous vous trouvez devant la Villa Plaisance, joyau architectural typique de Lacanau devenu la mairie annexe à Lacanau-Océan.
L'histoire de cette ancienne villa est intimement liée avec l'édification de la station balnéaire de la commune de Lacanau.
Propriété de M. Pierre Durand, l'architecte de la Société Immobilière de Lacanau et du Chemin de Fer de Lacanau à l'Océan, elle fut construite en 1906.

Située juste derrière l'ancienne gare de Lacanau-Océan, là où se trouve maintenant l'Office du Tourisme, la villa Le Matelot fut construite par Jean-Emile Lacaze sur un terrain acquis en 1906 à la Société Immobilière de Lacanau et du Chemin de Fer de Lacanau à l'Océan.
La villa Le Matelot fut un restaurant où les familles venues à l'océan pouvaient manger "à la portion". Elle était surmontée d'une tour au faîte de laquelle trônait la statue d'un matelot qui faisait la joie des voyageurs à l'arrivée des trains. Ce matelot symbolisait le lieu, le Crohot des Matelots, sur lequel furent construites une partie de la station et de la gare.
Disparue dans les années 1940, la statue est de retour depuis les festivités du centenaire de Lacanau-Océan. La statue, proche de l'original, a été réalisée par Frédéric Hauselmann en métal et résine. Jusqu'en 2019, il vous suffisait de lever les yeux et vous aperceviez le Matelot qui vous accueillait à bras ouverts.

A century-old seaside resort

You are in front of Villa Plaisance, typical architectural jewel of Lacanau, which is now the town hall annex in Lacanau Ocean.
The story of this ancient villa is closely linked to the foundation of the seaside resort of Lacanau Ocean.
Owned by Mr Pierre Durand, the architect of the real estate company "Société Immobilière de Lacanau", Villa Plaisance was built in 1906.

Located just behind the former Lacanau railway station, where is now the Tourist Office, Villa Le Matelot was built in 1906 by Jean-Emile Lacaze.
Villa Le Matelot was once a restaurant, where families coming to the seaside could eat "à la portion". It was topped by a tower where was enthroned the statue of a Sailor who delighted passengers when trains were coming in. It was symbolizing the place called "Crohot des Matelots" where was built a part of the resort and the railway station.
The statue disappeared in the 40s and is back since the 100th anniversary of the seaside resort in 2006. It has been reconstituted identically by Frédéric Hauselmann, made of metal and resin. Until 2019 you just had to raise your eyes and you could see the Sailor welcoming you with open arms.
