HOSPITAL TERMAL DONA LEONOR - CALDAS DA RAINHA
Fundado em 1485 pela Rainha D. Leonor, o Hospital Termal das Caldas da Rainha é o mais antigo do mundo, contando já com cinco séculos de existência. No século XV (1485) a Rainha D. Leonor funda um estabelecimento de banhos e um hospital termal, as Caldas da Rainha. Segundo reza a História, em 1484, a esposa de D. João II ia em direção à Batalha e, ao passar pelo sítio onde se viriam a erguer as Caldas, viu alguns pobres metidos em "prezas daquelas águas cálidas que saíam da fonte fumegando". Perante a sua curiosidade foi-lhe respondido que eram doentes de "frialdades", e que naquelas águas encontravam remédio para os seus padecimentos. D. Leonor decidiu então criar melhores condições para os utilizadores daquelas águas. O pavilhão do Hospital Termal, construído em finais do século XIX, com as suas altas janelas, é um belo exemplo de arquitetura termal. Founded in 1485 by Queen D. Leonor, the Caldas da Rainha Thermal Hospital is the oldest in the world, with five centuries of existence. In the 15th century (1485), Queen D. Leonor founded a bathing establishment and a thermal hospital, Caldas da Rainha. According to history, in 1484, the wife of D. João II was heading towards Batalha and, passing by the place where they would rise the Caldas, saw some poor people in "praises of those warm waters that came out of the steaming fountain" . Faced with his curiosity, he was told that they were sick with "coldness" and that in those waters they found medicine for their suffering. D. Leonor decided to create better conditions for the users of those waters. The Thermal Hospital pavilion, built in the late 19th century, with its tall windows, is a fine example of thermal architecture.
