Geocache Description:

The Cathedral of Guarda (Guarda, Portugal) was erected following the request of D. Sancho I to Pope Innocent III to transfer the diocese of Egitânia to the new city of Guarda. From the original construction, in the Romanesque style, nothing remains. There were, however, some vestiges that point to a simple building.

A second cathedral was to be built by D. Sancho II, at the site of the present Misericordia Church, which was completed in the 14th century, but later destroyed during the Ferdinand's reform of the walls, because it was located outside them, for fear of conquering the city. city for Castile, because it could be used to climb to the wall.

The construction of the present Cathedral of Guarda dates back to the end of the 14th century, and in the reign of D. João I - D. Fernando would have failed in the promise of erecting a new church - on the initiative of Bishop Vasco de Lamego, the dynastic crisis. The works were dragged slowly and only in the reign of D. João III they would be finished, already in the XVI century, being for that reason one of the Portuguese monuments of the last times of the Gothic, with clear evidences of the Manueline influence.

The history of the cathedral had an important period in its conservation, at the turn of the century: in 1898 the architect Rosendo Carvalheira was responsible for the restoration of the building, performing here one of the most important projects of revivalist restoration, reason why it is remarkable the state of conservation of the cathedral.

Closed to the cult during the Instauration of the Republic, with the excuse of guaranteeing its restoration never realized, it reopened again on June 21, 1921 for the episcopal consecration of D. José do Patrocínio Dias, bishop of Beja and native of Covilhã, Diocese of the Guard.Sé-Catedral da Guarda
