Geocache Description:

This is one of 12 caches placed for CAM 2020. You are required to find the nine physical caches and have your choice for number 10. It will be between 2 virtuals and a wherigo.

If you find all twelve, you will receive a special icon to download and put on your geocaching profile. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all of the caches, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

This cache is available during daylight hours only, no exceptions.

Park only on the street to visit this site - do not park in or block any driveways, off-street lots, or bus lanes.  You will be driving through the campus of the Maryland School for the Deaf, so be extremely cautious of and around pedestrians - they may not be aware of your presence until they see you.

Historic Frederick Town Barracks

aka the Hessian Barracks

As the American Revolution unfolded, the Maryland General Assembly authorized construction of these barracks in 1777.  The limestone structure in front of you, built in 1778, is among the oldest and most important surviving American military structures in the nation.  The original barracks consisted of two L-shaped buildings, but only the eastern wing remains today.  From 1782 - 1783, German prisoners of war were housed here, and the buildings later became known as the “Hessian Barracks”.

In 1802, explorers Lewis & Clark used the barracks as a depot to gather supplies for their Corps of Discovery expedition into the American West.  By April of 1812, United States troops were quartered here; among them the 6th U.S. Infantry, as well as militia from Maryland and Virginia, as they made their way to Washington and Baltimore to repel British troops.

In the 1850s, the Agricultural Society of Frederick held their annual exposition here.  This later evolved into The Great Frederick Fair, which continues to this day at the county fairgrounds not far from here.  During the Civil War, doctors, nurses and volunteers cared for wounded soldiers brought in from South Mountain, Antietam, Gettysburg, Monocacy and other Civil War battles.

By 1868, the Maryland School for the Deaf occupied the barracks and surrounding property.  To make way for the school’s main building, the west wing of the barracks was dismantled.  The remaining building housed students and teachers, classrooms and workshops. It was later converted into a museum to help support academic programs.

At this site, you will find informational signage describing other details of the Frederick Town Barracks’ history.  Read the signs to find the answers you need to claim this cache.
