About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

About New Croydon Station

New Croydon Train Station is unusual in that while the station no longer exists by name, the platforms are still used by thousands of people every single day.

This is because you know New Croydon more commonly as platforms 1 and 2 of East Croydon Station. Even stranger, is that this wasn't a simple case of the station being named - East Croydon has already been in existence for 20 years when New Croydon was opened in the early 1860s directly adjacent.

While East Croydon trains ran to London Bridge, the New Croydon routes went to Victoria, and initially acted as a terminus. This proved difficult, and the line was extended to South Croydon to enable easier turn around of locomotives.

New Croydon also briefly served Central Croydon Station for three years in the late 1860s before that line ceased operation (Croydon Town Hall was built on the site of that station).

New Croydon continued to operate entirely independently of it's neighbour station until 1898 when it was merged into East Croydon Station (although continued to operate with two ticket offices for a period thereafter. The picture above shows the combined station shortly after the merger.

Now for the event:

This is an early morning meetup in a lovely little seating area close to platforms 1 & 2 (but clear of the actual station).

Consider this a warm up to SideTracked Day events on the following Saturday, or the UK Mega if you're heading there!
