Geocache Description:

Bon Geocaching !

The belfry of Millau :

The Belfry dominates the heart of the old town from the top of its 42 m.

Built in the 12th century on the probable site of the primitive castle of the Counts of Millau, the medieval keep, or Square Tower, ensured the security of the fortified enclosure in its southwest corner.

Private property from the thirteenth century, it will be purchased by the consuls of Millau in 1613 to serve as a base for the octagonal tower to house the bumblebee. Thus was born the Belfry.

The Square Tower will serve as a prison from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century and especially during the revolutionary period.

The building, as we see it today, is deprived of its beautiful arrow, burned by the lightning on July 29, 1811. This one carried the total height of the whole to 52 meters.

From the terrace of the summit, equipped with six orientation tables we discover a remarkable panorama on the city of Millau and its surroundings: Church of Our Lady of Espinasse, Church St Martin, Lavoir of Ayrolle. Place Foch, old houses, causses and viaduct of Millau.

Have a nice geocaching !
