Not much to say here except that this is a Patchogue tradition. Hubby and I graduated from PMHS back in the 80's and hung out at the triplex nearly every weekend. Had to walk by this spot all the time and we added to it every time.
Looks like some cleaning up has been done since then. I suppose 15 - 20 years has been a long time and if the clean up isn't done periodically, well things could get a little sticky. I would hate to have the job! Don't know if this has been going for longer than that but I suspect so, after all a lot of people can't walk and chew gum at the same time, and since you need to go down the sidewalk...well it just makes sense.
