Da je v Begunjščici dokaj zlata, so vedeli že stari ljudnje, predvsem rudarji. Pa so kopali pred sto, dvesto, tristo ali še več stoletij rudo v Begunjščici sami pošteni možaki. Pa jim je začelo naenkrat zmanjkovati. Enemu kruha, drugemu mesa, tretjemu zaseke in še in še... Le kdo bi utegnil biti, so se spraševali. Kmalu so spoznali možica, ki bi z glavo niti do vrha mize ne segel, oblečenega v zelene hlačice in zelen jopič in pokritega z rdečo prišiljeno kapico. Sedaj so vedeli, da jim hodi krast Berhmandelc. Gorskega škrata jim je uspelo prelisičiti z nastavljenim žganjem. Pod grožnjo rudarjev jim je izdal skrivnost, da na sam božič, med tem ko bije ura polnoč, namesto bistre vode iz studenca Roža priteče čisto zlato.

Vodja, ki je priganjal poštene rudarje k delu, je slišal za skrivnost zlatega studenca. V mrzli božični noči je ob zvonenju postavil škaf in začel šteti. Prav zares se mu je zazdelo, da curek zlato cinglja. "Joj, joj bogastva," se je čudil in doštel do enajst. In namesto da bi odstavil škaf, se je iz pohlepnosti zakasnil. Poprijel je, pa ga ni mogel dvigniti. Segel je vanj, a otipal samo mrzlo vodo. Postala ga je groza in stekel je proti Jamam. Ko so ga na Sv. Janez dan v njegovi koči obiskali rudarji, ga skoraj niso več spoznali. Prej črnolas je osivel, tresla ga je mrzlica in govoril je kakor v klamah. Čez teden dni so ga v črnih, prazničnih oblekah spremili na pokopališče in mu voščili slovo z rudarskim "Srečno!"

Then they knew that the thief was Berhmandelc. They managed to trick the mountain dwarf with spirit. Under the theat he told the miners a secret that at Christmas, when the clock strikes midnight, instead of clear water from the spring Roža runs pure gold.
A supervisor, who pushed miners to work, heard for the secret of the golden funtain. In the cold Christmas night he set a bucket underneath the fountain, when the clock started to strike and he began to count. Indeed it seemed to him that he hears jingling of gold. "Oh, oh, my wealth," he marveled, and counted to eleven. And instead of removing bucket, he delayed it, out of the greed. He held the bucket, but could not raise it. He reached into it, but felt only cold water. He became terrified and ran towards caves. When the miners visited him in his cottage on St. John's Day, they hardly recognized him. Previously, he had black hair, now they had grown grey, he was shaken by the fever, and he could hardly speak. A week later they escorted him to the cementary in the black clothes and wished him goodbye with a miners greeting "Good luck!"
