The world of agents and spies - famous characters
Although spies and agents act secretly and their identities are not disclosed, there are some we know. As fictional characters and movie heroes or even real agents who have come into the limelight by the press discovering their activity, their operations and actions in secrecy fascinate us.
Mata Hari
(1. 3 words) first saw the light of day on 7 August 1876 in the Netherlands, in (2.) / Netherlands. There is also a statue of the dancer near her birthplace, at (3.).
Her espionage activity for the German secret service, which she carried out under the code name (4. / x-xx), seems to have been mainly exaggerated by all sorts of rumours. She probably attained her fame as an exotic dancer.
In (5.), before she started this career, she married (6. / 3 words), who was about 20 years older. After the birth of her first son, the family travelled by steamship SS (7./ 2 words) to (8.), a colony of Dutch Indies at that time. There she got her second child, a daughter. When Queen (9.) ascended the throne, she had her first public appearance in "(10. / 2 words – German!)" by August von Kotzebue.
The marriage was not very harmonious, probably because of the big age difference. After her son's death and her husband's retirement, the couple returned to Europe, where it finally separated. Since she now had to earn her own living expenses, she finally went to France, where she pretended to be from India and acted as a veil dancer. She gave herself the name Mata Hari, meaning "(11. / 3 words – German!)". She decorated her origin and family history with all kinds of exotic stories, which was very popular in the Belle Époque at the time. So she travelled successfully through Europe, fascinating the male world with her exotic and erotic dances and was probably not averse to many love adventures. In Berlin, she appeared in 1907 at Friedrichstrasse at the "(12. / 2 words / é=e)" and in front of Emperor Wilhelm II.
Her activity as an agent probably started shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. Not patriotism was her motivation, but the money. There were more and more young ladies who, like her, appeared freely and challenged her rank. In The Hague, she is said to have been recruited by Consul (13. / xxxx x. xxaxxx) for a sum of (14.) Francs to collect information in France that would be of use to Germany. She received a code name and was said to have been trained by the head of the German espionage division against France, (15. / 2 words / ü=ue).
Her downfall was probably that she was also recruited by France and was eventually arrested by the French counter-espionage. In a quick trial, she was sentenced to death and in the morning of (16. Date: dd.mm.yyyy!) executed in (17.).
Already in 1927, the story of Mata Hari was filmed in (18.). But probably much better known is the Hollywood production from 1931 with (19. / 2 words) in the title role.
